My very first game on chess.com was against the then top rated player here, he must've just seen I was a new comer and challenged me. Needless to say I won...NOT!
Challenging a higher-rated player

well my ratin is 1800+, and i definitely want to make friends, so challenge me and lets see what happens. :-)
regards

If interested in playing a stronger player there is another group of player, a chess com newbie, whose chess com rating is lower than FIDE rating. Not sure if possible to search on FIDE rating though.

Why bother. I don't think you will learn much from playing a very highly rated player unless they coach you, which they are unlikely to do. Isn't it better just to go through the grades play as often as you can and improve that way.

I guarantee that anyone on this site has a legit chance to beat me, no matter what their rating is.
I have found Tournaments are the best place to play diverse opponents.

TheMoonwalker asked: How high rated are we talking about?
I was thinking in terms of 200+ points above (me).
Although I started this thread, I am not personally that desperate to play better-rated players. I already manage to lose quite frequently enough against players rated 100..200 points LOWER than me!
However, several better players have offered me games and many have taken the trouble to point out some of the areas where I could improve - often in detail. I am naturally very appreciative of all their efforts - and of the fantastic, altruistic spirit that motivates so many people here at chess.com.

I'll usually play (significantly) lower rated players if I know them, have made friends with them (often people I stumble upon in live chess, where my rating is a little lower), or meet them in tournaments. Otherwise it's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time... if I just lost a bad game to a much stronger opponent I'll offer a challenge to lower rated players to boost my ego :).
Of course I'm not even a 1900 player at the moment so I don't think you're talking about me when you say 'higher rated players'.
Now, there is one foolproof way to get games with people... get good :). Once you get to the point where no one is more than 200 points above you you can bet that getting games is easier :).

You're rated 250 above me - way out of my league!

thanks, why not? As somebody nearly said recently: "if I just lost a bad game to a much stronger opponent I'll 'BEAT UP' a lower rated player to boost my ego :)".

Challenge them unrated, that's my best advice. The only reason you should want to challenge someone higher is to learn and see how you do against them, winning/losing rating points should have nothing to do with this. It's a learning experience.

It takes time. Set up about 15 or 20 games by open seeks and starting new games and over time you will get a higher rating. Experience only comes from playing a lot of chess. Play against the computer on the hardest setting. I reckon the hardest setting is equivelent to about 1900 or 2000.

well playing with high points than yours is not easy because they get small points from you and if you win you get the higher point than they have win and some of us this is not good so you have to seek at your laìevel point that you have and gain some points to reach the point example 1600--1700or even 3000points if u can do that

This is how I got around it...
On the homepage click "more"
Select "friends"
Then "send challenge link"
"create link"
After you've copied the link go back to your "friends list"
Click the toggle button on the friend you want to challenge and click "send message"
Paste the link send the message and when they click on it you should be able to play.

What's the recommended way to get a game with a higher-rated player? Is it:
a) berate all higher-rated players generally in the forums, claiming not one of them will play you
b) belittle a specific player with whom you would like a game
c) just challenge the player
d) other (please specify)
d) do a Dennis Miller impersonation
But seriously - joining OPEN touranments is the best way. I'm playing someone 700 pts below my rating in a tournament right now.
