Chat censoring seems pointless.

Type it out enough times uncensored, and the word a-hole can get you banned, because think of the children, I guess? At the same time, though, you can swap out the s for a $ or a z and curse to your heart's content. You can say literally anything in chat, as long as it's not a properly spelled curse word. This little gem, for example, is copied out of the chat from the top game this evening:

[Edited for language - Mod.] STOLE MY IDEAS, CANT COME UP WITH ANYTHING OF HIS OWN AND WONT EVEN TELL ME WHAT HIS USERNAME WAS LOL. WHAT A [Edited for language - Mod.]

If that's acceptable, why even bother to censor anything?

It's not acceptable. If you report it to support(via email), the member will probably be warned and may possibly be muted.  With tens of thousands of games per day, chess.com depends on its members to alert it of problems.

The automated checker obviously doesn't catch everything but it does cause people to have to think a bit before they let loose. I think that is a good thing.

That isnt acceptable, and shouldnt be.  You can report abuse here:

https://support.chess.com/customer/portal/emails/new

You can also block the member.

One shouldn't expect a bullet proofed censorship against bad words or bad language at all.

People will always find a way to let bad words on the table.
