Chat whilst playing chess
Sorry I hit send too soon... I'm rated about 1100 so if anybody wants to start a 3 day per move game of chess with some chat at the same time, then let me know!
I don't mind a little chat during a 10 minute game. It can lead to a quick post mortem on the game and maybe a little bit of what the poms call banter.
By the way, Mr Woolensock, how and why did you mute me from your thread about "rude" words? There was an episode of Utopia a couple of years ago which I expect would have been shown on BBC with a running gag about a Professor Sofkok. Reminds me of you....

I always have chat disabled in live games. I have it active in Daily games, but I rarely chat there either.

We already have a Lori and, boy, is she in bug trouble!
A bit of a hornet's nest?
It was better in the days of Yahoo and ICQ etc where people used to talk to each other in chatrooms. Yahoo added a games section where you and your buddy or whatever random person you happened upon could meet up there and play. In those days chat was the primary function, the games was just something to do while chatting - and that included Chess.
People are quite happily sleep walking into an anti-social society.

Yeah, but yahoo is yahoo. Chess.com, by its name, is somewhere people come to play chess first and any chat is secondary. Someone wouldn't come here to chat who doesn't play chess and then just suddenly decide 'Oh, let's have a game of chess while we chat'.
There's not usually a whole lot to say to an opponent in a correspondence game unless occasionally about the position, but I find that to be very rare.
Admittedly, not everyone who uses Chess.com uses the forums but it would be a start.

Sometimes a good chat enhances the chess experience. But when poor sports abuse chat by saying stupid things, then I disable it. There needs to be a chat report button to send such B.S: to suspend users who do that.

Like many have mentioned, this is not OTB and it is understandable if your opponent is more focused on the game than leisure chatting. However, it depends on the person and context. I find that online players are more willing to chat if:
-there are longer time controls: especially daily or live games with increment.
-the game is unrated
-your opponent is "friendly" and being a chess.com friend of yours helps, but by "friendly" I really mean more sociable. Some people just don't care for chat and others feel there is ettiquette to chat.
Context is everything. I recommend finding a few players who enjoy mid-game chat and playing them more often, but do not be offended if someone else would rather focus on the game.

I enjoy chat, but seems to might be waning in popularity this year, even when playing folk from my own country/language. Learned a few things in my 16 mos here(have 70 followers tho not a very good player) Playing 30min Rapid, wait til 5 elapsed b4 saying "Hi" with sometimes a phrase/question about weather. Give my general location if playing someone from 'States. No reply or seem like just a courtesy response then silence, I leave them alone. About 1 in 20 seem like interested in dece exchange. A few other things I will add if this thread keeps going.

I don't mind chatting while playing, however I usually don't start any conversation. I'm aware that not many people here are willing to chat.
I've experienced this also. I usually do not chat, but whenever I do initiate the conversation the other person is typically quite responsive. So maybe we're all just sitting here thinking the other person doesn't want to chat. And I am referring to daily games, where time is not an issue.
