Cheaters Beware - You Will Be Caught

I once spent over two hours looking at a position a GM assigned a friend as homework. I found the best move possible in the position. It was completely the best move and I could show why every other move was inferior. My understanding was complete and for that moment I was the best player in the world.
Then I had to find the reply...

here a thought though.
I am not one for cheating and I will not cheat to win a game of chess through the use of a computer or books by my side during play, besides i have enough trouble trying to play the game without adding other stuff to the equasion.
But my though is this: - how did these cheats get cought cheating?
were they on the site braging about it? If so then that defeats the purpose surely of what they were trying to do, look good at chess playing. Unless the who point was just to make some one look bad in ratings.
Still the world is not round its got flat ends.

But my though is this: - how did these cheats get cought cheating?
Grandmaster, International Masters,Master and Expert Players can all sense and feel who their Playing through the power of intuition a Computer has a very unique and distinct presence than a Human being on a Chess Board and is clearly regognizable there is also hard proof: the experts will rip the games apart and match the moves to Fritz, Junior, Shredder until they find their winner.

I don't think Erik directly accused them of using computers to win games. That is very difficult to prove. He did say people would be banned for a variety of reasons... one that comes to mind is people creating multiple accounts to lose games to their main account in an effort to run up their rating. There are a lot of silly things people do that aren't in the spirit of fair competition. Some of these things are very easy for the admins to see.
I also don't think what the people were banned for is a public issue, I think Erik just wanted to send out the warning that they are watching for these things and if (when) cheaters are caught, they will be dealt with.
Yes , I'm probably better off not knowing; although I didn't check alot of the posts before I made my one, many of which answered my query.
This topic got my attention, as a certain member is either very laid back (and no, I won't name names), or very busy doing other things, because I'm talking hours, even days between moves...

There is Tools available That can see what you see on your Screen on a pop-up screen on their computer. So if You are playing or Analysing a game that you played earlier they will know. Because it is like having your screen on a pop-up screen on their computer.
But if you are playing a live Game with some one and you are using a engine for your moves then you can be seen.
You Already set your firewall for this site. so in a sense it cannot be noticed.
They are known as security and Network tools.
Good tool for catching cheaters at it red handed.
So be warned.

"What do you do then if you suspect someone is using a program or engine or something?"
First, keep in mind the possiblility that you could be wrong. Second, keep in mind that, even if you are right, it may be unprovable. To me those two possibilities would indcate that you proceed discreetly, with caution and avoid any overt accusations or confrontations.
I would ask an administrator to examine the game and follow his direction, whether to my advantage or not. A third party with no vested interest and a lot of common sense can be objective and fair.

Yes you are right batgirl. Best way to report suspected computer abuse is to contact one of the site administrators about the game and why you think the other person may have used a chess computer program to assist them during the game.
But please remember "innocent until proven guilty", so there needs to be some substantial evidence for that person to be sanctioned for cheating.

i use fritz sometimes to look at what i COULD have done, or what the other one could have done in certain situations,
it has happened that i thought someone was cheating, but only during the endgame, where there are SO MANY moves u can do that doing what fritz suggests all the time is very suspicious
still impossible to prove tho :(

Actually in the end games is where most of the people I played over-the-board matched computer play. It's because computers aren't even calculating, they are just looking up the move in their endgame table databases. Humans do the same thing in the endgame. We just regurgitate the endgame stuff we study taking a little time to make sure it applies in this position. You know; B vs. R and all that wonderful opposition and triangulation stuff we learned.
As for titled players, many of them (dozens) have been banned from chess servers for cheating with computers. Since most of them did not put up arguments, they may be guilty.
