Cheaters Beware - You Will Be Caught

Thank you Eric for keeping the site clean.

Being a newcomer to this website, I would not dare to say much about cheating here. But it is true elsewhere. I have been beaten by players 200 to 300 points below my rating. This is on a website where blitz games are played. Blitz games are supposed to eradicate cheating by computers and yet these things are  happening. It is very obvious - handheld computers  are being  used as an aid! What is the solution to this perennial problem?  We have to put our heads together to find it.

Exactly.

But I would surmise that people who cheat aren't really as interested in becoming good, as they are in just seeming good.

I know for a fact that I have been whipped by 1200's and it was quite obvious. As players all we can do is police ourselves and bring our concerns to the "web leader". It's up to us to keep integriety in the game and the site. Noone wants a yahoo site.

I think when you get whipped by a 1200 it is because a really good player just joined the board.  :-)     Regarding cheating, if someone consitently takes 47 of 48 hours to move when they are behind, they are just hoping you will need to be away from the computer for 2 days sometime in the next month.  These c haps need to get a life.  The rating isn't worth it.

the good

the bad (the cheats)

and the Ugly (the cosequenses that they run away from)

If I'm playing someone who's cheating by using a computer then at least I get a decent game while all they get to do is press a few buttons.  I doubt anyone would continue to play with a computer for long - wouldn't that be just too boring?  In which case let's just ignore them & wait for them to go away.

Or maybe some people's lives really are that sad ... or am I just being naive?

"or am I just being naive?"

It's very possible.

I thought loosing was just as - if not more important than winning in chess.  I'm not saying we should try to loose but it does teach us more about the game than winning does.  We can go back, ananlyze our mistakes, and see where we went wrong.  In the end your rating in chess is just a ballpark figure in terms of what kind of chess player you are.  It's sad that people think their rating is more important than actually learning something about the game.

mmm..pedantry, my favourite

i'll admit my ignorance and confess that i have no idea what the name for a female bat is!

However bat does rhyme with cat, which can be kitty-kat, or even kitty, its a rather long-winded logic i know, but you'd be rubbish at crosswords :-)

ditto!! i don't get it-what's the motive(profit, better rating, no to all)? apparently my motivation for playing(getting better at chess and meeting some incredible people-yes you are!)and the cheater's motivation(whatever thAT IS) ARE NOT THE SAME! it baffles me that someone would despoil such a great game by cheating, but perhaps that is more prolific than i first expected.

batgirl

"Would batty please you?"

No. It would merely describe me.

Yasser Arafat, he always looked a bit similar to a rat (or is that just me?)

Usually if you lose a piece without significant compensation, it's grounds for resigning.

My math teacher looks somewhat like a turtle to me....

I guess a turtle's more goofy than a rat though
