Cheating?

Are we allowed to do chess training while we have correspondence games going on ? For instance, I have some correspondence turn based games going on (you know NOT on the live chess portion of the site) and I did tactics trainer the other day (possibly yesterday) then I felt a little guilty because I did not know if this was technically cheating. I mean I don't think it is, I believe on this site people read articles, practice tactics, etc. (not during live games of course), so I was wondering if I am doing everything okay and within the rules? I can see how it would help me during my current games but in correspondes you can use the analyzer and analyze the game yourself, and I'm sure people get some help from chess articles, keeping up with current games, etc.

I mean I think its normal for us chess players to check chess news and this can technically help us if we have correspondence games going on, so does that mean we can't do that either?

At the time I didn't think I was doing anything wrong, but I just want to make sure I am allowed to study chess while I have correspondence games (just the regular games) going on? (I am not like looking for my positions in other games or anyting, just practicing chess and trying to get better, I realize that this is not okay in regular face to face chess and live chess, but I'm thinking correspondence chess is different).

So, in short, is using tactics trainer, and other chess training devices, and even reading articles and such, while I have correspondence games going, is that okay?

Do you seriously need to ask whether using the TT is legal while playing a correspondence game?  How many people on this site do you think would be able to use it if that were not allowed?

If you really think there could be an issue then search the forum for one of the other 163 threads talking about what you can and can't do while playing a turn-based game.

Sure.

Well logically, I didn't think so, but when I looked at the official rules, it didn't really quite state.  It mentioned that using books and the database for opening moves was okay.  But it didn't really mentioned other things such as tactics trainer, articles, etc.  And it didn't mentioned about the rest of the game outside of the opening.  I am just using such things at tactics trainer to become a better chess player, I am not like looking for specific positions as such.  I just wanted to clarify.

You see it mentions references tools during live games, but for the scope of correspondence games it doesn't mention things outside of books and databases.  What about articles? Tactics trainer? Etc?

For that matter using the TT would likely not be prohibited during live chess.  In fact I would enjoy watching the person who can do so while playing a five minute (or less) game.

Correct, I understand that point, nothing is prohibited during lives games. That makes sense.

If that would be the case, then you couldn't play any live games, because they could inadvertently put you in the same situation and teach how to handle the situation...it boils back down to intent...

Please be relevant, helpful & nice!

No, not nothing.  Outside assistance is prohibited.  That would include advice from a computer engine or a person about the position (which of course is also prohibited in correspondence/turn-based).  I believe it is also prohibited to use an analysis board (also prohibited in OTB play but not in correspondence/turn-based).

And what about articles? I do not use articles for specific positions that I currently have or specific games, but articles and books sometimes have computer analysis in them already. Like I said I am not looking for specific games I am currently playing, but perhaps this analysis has helped me in some way in turn based games, and while I am not using a computer engine myself to analyze specific games that are currently going on, I think we all see computer analysis lines on places like chessbase.com, etc.

No reference tools of any sort are permitted in Live Chess

Good article but again doesn't reference such things as tactics trainer and does it mean you can't use a book that has computer analysis in it? (Again I do use books to look for specific positions of current games I have going on, but still what if a book has computer analysis in it?).  Plus I suppose there is a lot of analysis that doesn't come from computers.

An what constitutes DURING a correspondence game, does that mean the result has not be established yet, or does that mean the position is visible to your eyes?
