1st use Linux

2nd use Mozilla Fire Fox (it allows you to automatically block trackers and many bad actors)

3rd use U-block origin and add blocker and Pop up blocker

and don't download anything because it's free

but that would eliminate Firefox, uBlock Origin, and most distros of Linux...

(Actually, I do all three.)

Haha, I follow the same.

TODAY when I logged in, I got some pop up that said, "Scanning / Verifying your browser"  ARE YOU KIDDING ME???  What kind of new spyware trackers have just been installed in my system????  HOW IN THE HELL CAN THIS WEBSITE GET AWAY WITH THIS?????  No options, just auto scanning.  I don't know why I bother playing chess here.  I know the Russians that run this site are collecting data and scanning your computer while we sit back and play chess.

Hmm, I never heard anyone refer to him as "Comrade Erik"...

I really like how whenever something happens that people don't like it's always either "the russians" or "the chinese government", which makes some sense but here is just random assumptions.

The popup was just being considerate - It didn't want you to be using a fake browser. (I doubt that it was actually doing any scanning...)

Who knows? Trolling and paranoia may or may not be related. Let's set up some Venn diagrams, lol.

OK, I've had my fun, now here's a serious response:

I'm not sure if anything is actually on your system - maybe yes, maybe no.

If something is on your system, there would be no way to know where it came from.

Chess.com uses a third-party ad server, and sometimes malicious ads can get through the ad server system. (The term for this is a malvertising attack, and some attacks don't even require you to click on anything.) Did this happen to you? I really don't know.

Should Chess.com be using a third-party ad server? In my humble opinion, no, they should be self-hosting their ads. But that's their decision to make. The site does have a system set up for reporting "bad ads", but that strikes me as a case of closing the barn door after the horse is already gone.

Would you be smart to try to prevent any malvertising attacks on Chess.com? In my humble opinion, you would be smart to install an adblocker like uBlock Origin and/or Adblocker Plus, and to use malware removal tools to analyze your system to remove any malware that might presently be on your system.
