Wow...this thread should be a sticky.
CHESS SETS USED IN BOTH UNOFFICIAL AND OFFICIAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Gosh, thanks for posting all this, MACRINUS . I've always wondered what sets were used in each of the World Championships.

Could I please suggest/ask that each player is named. Many thanks!
This thread has taken hours to make along with the research and time .
If you want the name of the players just do your own reseach ie a google seach etc for the year !

Where on earth did he get the time to put all this together? This must have taken hours....
And I just skimmed through it.....

The chess set used in Berlin 1910:
Macrinus, Please note that image #4 of Janowski in post #19 is from CS1904 and unrelated to the chessmen used in the World Championship 1910 match with Lasker. Walter Penn Shipley took this photograph during the tournament in Cambridge Springs.

With the 2021 WCC likely to be virtual, should we expect the design of the next WCC sets to stagnate until the world normalizes?

The 2013 Championship set was a one-off, so far. I'm sure it cost them a pretty penny to have a world-class industrial designer like Daniel Weil design the set. Perhaps a modification down the line (I'd love to see them fix those hollow-chested knights), but I wouldn't hold my breath for a new design anytime soon.

Bummer that was a one-off. Still, I prefer to collect chess sets used in Official WCC matches just like the favorite Reykjavik and the infamous 2013 WCC To over the games with strong annotations from books that usually follow the matches.

Most tournaments use pre-existing sets. A prime exception being the 1950 Dubrovnik set that was custom made for the 9th Chess Olympia at Dubrovnik Yugoslavia in (you guessed it) 1950. There are probably a few other examples, but they don't come to mind at this (senior) moment.
House of Staunton provides some beautiful limited editions sets to the St. Louis Chess Club that they use for the U.S. Chess Championships (both men and ladies), the Sinquefield and Cairns Cups, and many other tournaments they hold throughout the year.
Another example of a custom set created for a special event is the Mechanics Institute set that was made for a simultaneous exhibition given by Jose Capablanca at the San Francisco Chess Club of the same name in 1916, also available from House of Staunton.

Historical inaccuracy. The 1961, 1963, 1966, 1969 World Chess Championship was played with these chess sets.
Вы допустили ошибку. Матчи на первенство Мира 1961, 1963, 1966, 1969 играли одинаковыми шахматными комплектами "Гроссмейстерские СССР" которые на фото.

What a great thread. I think I will try and get shift my modest collection efforts into a study. Study up on each championship. Events leading up to it, the players road if you will. Key games of the match and then purchase a Reproduction set. I hope/ think it will give me a better appreciation for the sets and a richer understanding of chess history. I did something similar when building model WWII tanks and planes as a teenager.
