chess.com rating fluctuations

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has noticed a big downwards or upwards trend in the ratings on this site. My rating seems to fluctuate between 1200 and 1400 over a couple of weeks which seems like a lot. I don't think I'm playing that much differently aside from the occasional blunder....

Doesnt look like its fluctuating. You have just dropped a lot of points bcause you are losing a lot of games.

WOW! Sometimes the answer is too easy.

The ratings seem to mean nothing on this website.  It can be nerve-racking thinking that you are playing worse, when you are playing about the same as usual, objectively.

Yes, losing games against players rated in to low 1200s that had 1500+ ratings in November/December.

Agreed.  I get a little depressed by getting wrecked by someone who is in the high 1400's (because I tend to split games with 1600's), only to find that those 1400's have fallen from the 1600's, 1700's, and 1800's.  It's really absurd.  I can only speculat that this is the result of influxes of new chess.com accounts, baecause everyone starts at 1200.  They need to do a provisional rating for those people.  If they ice 10 consecutive 1600's, maybe they shouldn't be only in the 1300's, up from 1200.  It's silly.

I've seen this as well.  It's maddening.  I'd guess that it is part of their scheme to fish out computer players (that may play to a certain rating).  By misrepresenting the opposing players strength they can more legitimately test your actual play.  I hate it though.
