Hi everyone. I just want to say, first of all, I love this site. I love watching all the educational videos.
As a beginner (just got over 1200 right now in standard), I'm trying to learn as much as I can as quickly as I can. So obviously I'm watching a tonne of videos.
However, I'd like to give some feedback on how they may be improved to help new players (like me).
It would probably help beginners to hear (or see) less use of verbal notation. I think all the IM's and GM's that make the educational videos take their familiarization of the names of the 64 squares for granted.
"If d4, then c3 or c4, then takes, takes, h6, bishop e3, f6, g3 etc etc" It sounds like a different language, and I just get lost watching the videos.
Obviously I need to learn the squares, but that will come with time. I wouldn't want to see actual chess theory and education be retarded by lack of ability to follow rapid succession of verbal notation. I find myself taking my eyes off the board to look at the numbers on the side and letters on the bottom to find the coordinates, and then instructor has moved along to the next couple of moves and I'm behind.
Using verbal notation is fine if you go slowly enough that we can find the square before you move on. Also, it wouldn't be so bad to just say, "bishop goes here, knight takes the bishop and forks the rook and queen on these two squares (as you mouse over and highlight the squares)."
My other recommendation for videos is better explanation of why a best move is the best move. I often find myself watching videos and seeing moves that make absolutely no sense to me (like a knight being moved to a square on the board opposite from where the action appears to be taking place).
Obviously these moves are excellent and take into consideration what the master is planning to move five or six moves from now, but just jumping through the positions doesn't help the learners.
Anywho ... just a little feedback. I started at 800 when I joined chess.com, so that's decent progess I suppose). Thanks!
