commercialization of chess.com

This site is too much of a gem for me to ever consider abandoning it. However, I think it's worth noting that I don't associate the Axe line of colognes with the game of Chess. And I especially don't enjoy an infestation of commercialization on my favorite website. Honestly, turning off the commercials everytime I visit some of the main pages is getting extremely tiring.

Like all good things, it was only a matter of time before the Chess.com community gained popularity and expanded. This, without question, is a good thing, but with these good things come the negatives, like the advertisements.

Ah yes, I see the remove ads button. And yet its not for free members. Sorry, but I must have missed the meeting where chess enthusiasts have to pay to participate in their favorite activity, if they don't wish to be bombarded with propaganda (because that's what it is).

Am I the only one who is so strongly deterred by this? Concurrences, counter-arguments, etc. please respond!

And by the way, admins, and all others, keep the hate-speech and blocking off this topic as much as possible. I'm just a member opening up a dialogue, with my opinion. Thanks all! Cheers!

Click on the volume, and you won't have to hear it anymore. It remains silent after that.

Install Adblock Plus. (Yes! a button for non-payers that removes ads!)

Why whine when the solution is so simple and in your own hands?

i guess i get your beef, but the simple solution is--just pay.  until then, suck it up Holmes.  sorry, but them's the beans.  (i made that saying up)

"them's the beans"  I like it.  As for the ads, well...I paid my fee, so I don't know what ads everyone else experiences..but I do know, that for the number of hours of chess I get out of this site, I think my membership fee is a bargain.

Sadly, "just pay" is not always a solution, especially in 3rd world countries. (and before the Ausies get on my back, I'm not saying Australia is 3rd world, I'm speaking generally)

There are many young players over here, for example, who managed to scrounge an old clapped out pc from someone, stretches to pay for 100 or 200 meg data per month to at least be able to play a few games.

Then, every day he stands next to the road with his paintbrushes, and hopes somebody needs his roof painted, and that he will be picked for that, ahead of the other 20 guys standing on the same corner. Those "pennies per day" buys a bag of maize meal over here.

Ok fine. Some people are too poor to buy membership.  Well then they get ads.  You make it sound like the site is violating their human rights.

That's not what I said, I said payment is not always an option.

OP, you realize this website was made to make money?  Chess.com wasn't "commercialied",  it has always been commercial.  Either pay for a membership or download adblock.

then cope with the ads i guess.  not really sure there's much else to it.  i'm not anti-poor people. (ok maybe i am a bit) but dudes, this place is about making money.  who thinks differently?  shocking!!!!  but not really.

What a strange notion - you almost seem offended that you cannot do something for free when it ultimately costs the site owners lots of money to provide all of these facilities. Whether it is your favorite activity or not, it costs money - so if you don't want to buy premium, accept a few ads, not a terrible trade-off!!

I think that some of you completelly missed the point. I would't say that you would have to pay just to have annoying things removed, it has a distant sound of blackmail. Instead, just say what additional nice stuff membership would bring. Common sense, wouln't you say? :-)
Dragec
Well,it seems that you're not good at seling things. There are more subtle ways to say the truth, you know

Looks like you also missed the meeting where it was explained that internet users have to buy memberships to avoid ads (funny, I could've sworn everyone else heard about that meeting)...

It's ok to see ads as long as they are not too invasive. These ones are annoying as hell. You should try surfing the site for a day with the ads enabled and you would see how irritating it gets. Having these kinds of ads on your site will probably convince some of the users to buy a membership but I think it will deter a lot of us from using the site at all. There are plenty of good chess websites.
