Computer people?

Are there "people" playing Live Chess that are actually computers?

Avatar of Esquilax1

I'm not sure about live chess, but there is a feature on the site where you can play against a computer.  (In the "Play" menu, there is "Vs. Computer").  In that mode, you are playing against an actual computer opponent.

People get upset when their opponent uses a computer in live chess, and they rightfully call it cheating, but in this other mode the opponent actually is a real computer.  If that's not cheating against the human player then I don't know what is, and I am shocked that chess.com would shamelessly endorse such mischief.

There are a few "official" chess.com computers in Live, those being Computer1-Easy, Computer2-Medium, Computer3-Hard, and Computer4-Impossible. From what I hear, though, even Comp4 isn't that hard to beat if you can force it into a closed position. I've never played against them myself, though.

You are missing the point hopelessly. What people concerned about cheating are referring to is a person being assisted by a computer while pretending to make the moves unaided. If you know you are playing the site's computer, there is no pretence or cheating involved.

It would be one thing if chess.com was unable to detect computer-assisted players on live chess, but to go as far as to create a feature where you play against an actual computer (they even say "Vs. Computer") just cultivates this kind of treachery.

It is an absolute disgrace and an affront to legitimate competition.  If you can't see that then perhaps you are the one who is 'missing the point'.

If we're talking about computer cheating here, then yes, it does happen, but it's very seldom and the mods and admins of the site have protocols which are able to detect it very quickly. In other words, don't worry about it! If you suspect someone of using a computer, report them, otherwise chess.com staff do a good job of taking care of cheaters.

I don't think the original poster is asking about people who use computers to advise them on their moves, but about players who are themselves computers.

The real answer is no, a person cannot also be an actual computer.

But there are a few official chess.com computers on live chess as Twinchicky says, and they are marked as such, so that you don't mistake them for people (because that would be devious and despicable).

I cannot see that giving members the opportunity to play against the site's computer is in any way cheating. You either choose to do it or not. It is those members who use computers to make their moves while concealing this fact from their opponents who are cheating. "This kind of treachery" as you rather absurdly call it, is an honest and up front challenge to play against the computer. Furthermore, the site managers say they can detect concealed computer use by players.

I don't think you appreciate the enormity of the transgression.

These deliquents have created a mode where you're not just playing against a computer-assisted human.  You are playing against an actual computer.  That is a whole new dimension of cheating.  The fact that they even call it "Vs. Computer" shows how brazen their misdeed is.

It's shady enough that all my opponents are using computers just to simply log in and access the site.  That's on the boundary as it is.  It is a scandal, and it shall not go unpunished.

The rascality is unfathomable.

No, chess.com doesn't reduce matching time using computers that appear to be human.

If the player knows, accepts and is fully aware that he'll play with a computer, how's that cheating? *Logic*

i'm pretty sure he's asking if it's possible that Chess.com itself pairs you with opponents that seem to be actual people (human) but are actually computer opponents created by Chess.com itself to reduce the waiting time for getting a game started.

You should see post #7 where I provided the legitimate answer.

Survey the thread before you postulate, sister.

Because it is of the devil.

@RG1951, @GrnfFrtzl - Esquilax is pulling your leg!

How is it that you do not see this?

OP here--thanks for the comments/answers. I was just a bit baffled when I saw an opponent using sentences and phrases in the game chat that were identical to a previous player. Maybe that's just a blitz tactic of cutting/pasting something into the chat browser. These were along the lines of "Ready to lose? Cause you're going to hahaha."

Stop trolling. You've never even played online or live chess on that account.

Prove it.

Would you accept a random sampling of 100 chess.com members as proof?
