Considering Retiring my Account

My account is up for renewal on March 4th.  I had every intention of renewing until a few things happened all together which have made me doubt my values are in line with Chess.com values or the lack of effort for my personal concerns.  Chess.com has a wonderful community and a very user friendly interface.

Three things this week have put me off quite a bit.

1. Chetumal's account deletion; and particularly her comments and existence being erased.  Everywhere she has commented and someone has responded, it appears a ghost has been there and you are responding to an imaginary friend.

2.  I posted an image in my photo album which understandably some might have found visually disturbing.  It was of a holiday ritual goat sacrifice.  Children who have not grown up on farms or who don't know how their meat arrives to them could naturally be disturbed.  I do appreciate that I received a message letting me know that they've removed the image.

These two above would have still been tolerable but last, but not least...

3.  I would rather my city location not be identified on Chess.com's interactive map.  Apparently this is just too bad.  Privacy as to what city one is in is not really your right on Chess.com. It's public access.  For someone like me who shares a lot of personal details, I don't appreciate my location being divulged to just anyone.

For those who are friends, if my account is to be closed perhaps we can link up on facebook.  thanks.

Hey, Afaf:  I think I would be most upset about #2.  You were doing those children who didn't grow up on a farm a service.  People need to know that a living creature gave up its life to fill their belly.

Anyway, I've never had goat.  Is it as good as lamb?

rubygabbi

As for your first reason, you might supply some detail and history, since those who are not acquainted with this matter (such as myself) will not really get the point.

As for your second reason, what constitutes good taste is a very subjective matter, but I believe the site administrators have the right to use their discretion.

If you didn't want your hometown published, why did you list it in your profile? If this info is mandatory, you could have typed in a ficticious name. At any rate, Rabat is a bit enough city for you to remain anonymous in it if you so wish.

All in all, I see no justification for your leaving the site.

Loomis

How does Chess.com even know your city location? You didn't tell them, did you?

Kernicterus

Goat and lamb have a very similar taste.

My hometown is in my profile.  My city location is not.  People are able to tell me where I am located on the globe at this very moment.  Chess.com has a charming little interactive map where you can locate people.

No, I did not tell them.  nor did I tell them they could share this information with others.

Actually you did tell them - it is in your profile. If you don't want that shown then delete the info from your profile.

As to #1 - I only followed that drama a bit. Didn't she threaten to kill someone? If so, I'd say that was a tad over the top.

As to #2 - well, Chess.com has it's policies I suppose and like any policy can be applied in a blanket manner. Question to you (or anyone) why does it matter? Why would you bother or care to post images here or be chuffed by the guidelines. I don't get that.

Kernicterus

Tomjoad.  do you know how to read?  Read the above posts.  My HOMETOWN is in my profile.  My location is NOT.

Posts like these always leave a bad taste.

I mean, how are we supposed to respond? Encourage you to leave? Beg you to stay? I don't see the point.

Atos

Yes, there is an interactive map that could be used to locate someone's home address, or almost, I was told. (Well at least the street) I believe that this can only be used by paying members.

philidorposition

I was one of the people (I assume) who reported that picture in your photo album which included the separated head and the body of the goat and with lots of blood.

So removal of that picture put you off huh. Seriously? This site is not 18+. There are children, as well as mature individuals who have not given consent to encountering such shocking & obscene visual material, including me. You really should have known better.

A bad taste?  For who exactly?  Could you be a little more self centered?

I think you may think it's the correct protocol to start in with the aloof responses, but nobody asked for your response at all.  I think my points above have clarified the matter of what I am interested in informing about.  If it's of no interest to you, poof be gone.

Sensuinaga

Do what you have to do man.  I don't particularly like all the censorship here either.

We are all entitled to our opinions without rebuke.  If you feel like those issues are deal breakers then don't renew.  If there are enough people who feel the same way as you and don't renew either--chess.com will be forced to make a change.  But for those of you who don't feel like those issues listed above are a big deal.......no need to make the guy feel bad or alienated about it or point out how frivelous his concerns are to you.  Live and let live.

Just my thoughts,

-Sensuinaga

Removal of the picture put me off, but I understood the decision...and I was told I have the right to make the album private and include the picture...so that's not really a dealbreaker.

The location issue is.

As for Chetumal, it's likely that they just left. When you close your account everything gets wiped out except in exceptional cases.

As for the city - can't you pick some random place instead? I'm not really sure if it's an IP tracker of some sort or something else.

And you could simply downgrade to a free account instead of just deleting your account here.

downgrading still allows your location to be found.  It's really the most irritating thing.  And it is a tracker.

A bad taste for me.

If you have concerns about decisions made and actions taken on this site, by all means, go ahead. Such issues are of interest to me. But threatening account closure seems just a little dramatic and attention seeking.

So, poof, I'm gone....

Wow, aren't you the snarky princess today. If you are concerned about "Rabat" being in your profile then just leave that field in your profile blank. How hard is that? Perhaps you are referring to something else.

If it really is an IP tracker, and if it really publicly reveals your location and you can't do anything about it, it's not only a dealbreaker, it's scandolous in my opinion. I'm pretty sure you're missing something.

Try logging out, deleting all your browsing history & cookies etc. and log in back to Chess.com through a proxy (with a different IP location, like U.S) and see if the location changes.

Kernicterus

Well, if it was attention seeking...I don't think I'd have already contacted Chess.com to see if they could do something to help before making my post.

Tomjoad.  I don't know what to say more to make you understand...think of it as a chess puzzle.  I am NOT in Rabat, Morocco.  People that I've refused to tell personal information to have told me where I am on the planet...I've recently learned that it's thanks to Chess.com's fascinating feature...an interactive map...that gives my location.  Which is fine if you're in Houston Texas or Boston Mass...it is NOT fine for those of us in remote locations.

ichabod801

I just did a check. I'm at work, 11 miles from my home. The map is showing my location as 3000 feet from my home.
