This should be awesome!
CRITICAL NEWS: Important Chess.com Site Update Message

What does this mean?:
"Massive changes to database structure to allow for the huge growth that Chess.com has had over the last 2 years. We're building for the future!"

Hey, yeah! It'd be so cool if we could get a fresh start on the ratings too. I mean, it only makes sense, right?? Oh, you don't want to make sense? I see. My apologies. How stupid of me; a new server with no disconnections should use ratings that were affected by disconnections. Yeah, my bad. I must be out of my mind.
Pardon the sarcasm. I love the site and the team, I'm just not behind this particular decision. As in all aspects of life, I know you can't make everyone happy.

Nothing that you should really notice, it just means the site will be more scalable and suffer less as more people join. (the site will be more stable)
Way to go Erik, hope it all goes as planned.

I hope Live Chess 2 maintains the windowed interface of Live Chess 1 and allows public chatting, as well as private out-of-game chats.

Simply put, it means we are changing the way that the servers store all of the massive amounts of information that is created by the site, (games, messages, games, games, games, and more games :- ) ). Exactly what the changes are is pretty technical and complicated, but what it means for you is that chess.com will remain stable and fast for a long time. :-)

I am so excited :D
I will probably go for a walk outside like Erik mentioned..
or if its early enough ill probably be at soccer tryouts.

good!!!!! as a system engineer... i think this is great!! i wish you the best on the changes!!!
i hope every things go ok!! without any problem!!! =D

this has probably already been answered, but when live chess 2 comes out, will be allowed to reset our ratings AS WELL as our win/loss/draw records? Thanks!

First, it's only temporary - as you play games, your rating will quickly move to its "true value".
And the existing ratings are bound to be more accurate than 1200 for everybody.

what difference could it possibly make?
because I have 10 losses in 1 min games, some of which were disconnects. and it looks kind of crap

when will the downtime end? So when will we be able to come back on the website?
4-8 hours after it goes down. Unfortunately, we can't be more specific than that, as we don't know what types of problems we'll encounter as we go. And if we say, "it will be up at this exact time" and we are two hours late because something didn't work like it was supposed to, people will be VERY upset.
THIS MESSAGE HAS ALSO BEEN SENT TO ALL CHESS.COM MEMBERS VIA MESSAGE:
Lots of great things are happening at Chess.com! This Saturday, October 3rd, we will be making some huge improvements to Chess.com. We will be OFFLINE for 4-8 hours on Saturday, October 3rd, starting at 9am PT (GMT - 8). During that time we will pause all games.
IMPORTANT: At that time we will be erasing all past live chess games!! If you want to save your old live chess games, you will need to download them.
You can find them here: http://www.chess.com/home/my_archive.html?sortby=date&show=live *
Here are some of the things we will be doing during that time:
Thanks for your support. I hope you will not be too inconvenienced by the downtime. Maybe you can take that time to write a letter to someone who means a lot to you, or go for a walk outside, or volunteer at a local charity. We'll be back online as quickly as we can on Saturday.
Thank you for understanding!
Erik and the Chess.com Team
(*If you really really want to save all of your Chess.com games of all time, including all live games, there is a link at the bottom of that page to do that. But that is a very costly feature on Chess.com servers, so don't download all games unless you really feel you need to.)
