chessplayer11, news correspondents used to mail in their news stories in days of yore. Mark Twain did. Now, of course, they do not; but we still call them news correspondents. That usage is analogous to the usage of "correspendence chess" online even though we no longer use postal mail for it. It works. Old terms can be kept after their meanings have evolved into newer but related meanings.
Debate: What to call "Online Chess"...

He`ll get you one time when you fully expect to win, then there`ll be another and another, i got my mrs into chess and now i struggle to beat her, she joined this site and now so do most others.
That's great that your Mrs plays, my husband never learned. I tried to teach him once but he gave up very fast.. but he's never been into board games or card games or any kind of games, not his thing. He prefers telly, fishing and cars... you can see by the cars album on my profile how cars are his hobby by the huge number of different cars we've owned.. only game he will play is table tennis, which we used to set up inside on the dining table.
I wish he liked chess as I get bored watching tv, except for a few shows I like. He likes the mindlessness of watching tv.. I like it/need that too sometimes, but can't sit and watch something am not interested in.. and most of what's on tv is rubbish/boring. But I do watch a few shows with him that I don't particular love just to be sociable til I am completely bored and then will come and play chess. lol

Was that voting link in post 1 always there or added later? would of had to have been added later since it contains the names later suggested in this forum... voted for Correspondence along with 50+% of voters. Slow chess even got more votes than daily chess.
How should we rename "Online Chess"? (This mean non-live chess with multi-day time controls.)
- Correspondence Chess (52%)
- Email Chess (4%)
- Echess (11%)
- Slow Chess (7%)
- Daily Chess (6%)
- Turn Chess (3%)
- Turn-based Chess (18%)

Well, this is my point. The reasoning is mainly tradition, not logic.

I recall trying to encourage my son to play chess for his school a couple of years ago, as a hobby. He said to me "Mum, only the nerds play chess". I said to him chess is a very cool game, it's not just a game for nerds. But he was younger then. We have an OTB game occasionally and he does enjoy it, but I keep beating him.. he wouldn't enjoy that. lol.
His passion is golf, so I tease him and say "only the snobs play golf". lol
Which has as much lack of truth as "only nerds play chess:"..
"Let him" win a few games and see his interest in chess grow, winning is more fun and a taste of this will spur him on. Good luck!

I'll never hear the end of it.. lol

Lol ok I will stay tuned.

chessplayer11 at # 712. No, that's my point. Language nearly always changes gradually through evolving usage, not logic and intellect. The meanings of words sometimes shift, but we continue to use the same or very similar terms to designate their shifting meanings. Using "correspondence chess" for what the site has been calling "online chess," a very inadequate term for "correspondence chess" to start with since the term does not distinguish it from any other kind of chess played on the internet, would be a perfectly natural thing to do and would be in keeping with the way in which language actually and normally does change, i.e., incrementally by tradition and usage, not suddenly by logic and intellect. I suppose that's why so many of the suggested terms in this thread seem so awkward and utterly silly. Take it from a guy who has two college degrees in English and a minor in English for a third degree.

Erik at posts #19 and #588. If your vote really is just that, a vote, then the name will be "correspondece chess" because if has gotten far more votes than any other choice. However, if your "vote" is a decision, there was no need for any of us to vote. We were merely sent on a fool's errand. All you needed to do was implement your own preference regardless of the preference of the majority of the members of the site who voted. So, which is it--a vote like that of the rest of us or a decision? If it's a decision, you should just implement it and let's be done with this. There obviously are many other things about the new user interface on which you and we can spend our time and energy more productively.

babs in post #711, yes, the vote link has been there from the beginning of this thread and has been updated continuously since then.

It's the wrong way to run a voting system Sooner.
Continuously adding names... should collect all the names first and then start a forum asking for votes.. I assume everyone can only vote once? If so what if a new name is added that someone likes better than the name they already voted for?

babs at post #719, exactly right. An earlier commentator whose name now escapes me doesn't seem to understand that changing the candidate name list after people have already voted partially disenfranches the early voters. What kind of reaction do you think people would have if we added candidates for political office after the election had already begun? Those who had voted earlier would cry "FOUL!" because some voters would have choices that others did not have.

It's an illogical voting system Sooner... people need to know ALL the options they are voting for upfront. You gave a perfect analogy. If you voted for a candidate for office and then hours after the voting booths had opened suddenly new candidates are introduced.. there would be riots.. hehe.

Probably... :)
