Defining cheating

I've got a question.

Is there a topic or some other kind of file that provides informations about what exactly is regarded as cheating, what is considered allowed rather than forbidden or even simply inappropriate or unfair (during a game and not only)?

For example, off course I know I can't use any kind of software to get hints or suggestions for my moves, that I'm not allowed to have multiple accounts etc; but what about consulting opening books or internet databases during a game, or generally getting aids from external sources other than the analisys board?

There should be a rules sections I think. Anyways to answer the question, you can use databases and opening books.

You should take a look at this for what exactly is allowed and not allowed during games:

I agree. I had one opponent who I suspected might be using an opening book, but in the end he made mistakes and walked into mate in one. So he wasn't cheating and I hope got a lot from the game for when he's playing OTB. That's what I'm here for, simulating a 'real' game to iron out mistakes and get better quickly.

Chess is another side of life and people will cheat as they usually do  it.  It 's about lack of self-respect and fear of defeat, which is  unimportant. The fair game  brings much more pleasure. Thanks for reading.

I think most of the players are not cheating. Because I am winning some games even with my very poor chess knowledge.

maybe if game analysis before making a move is cheating then i am cheating. i usually use analysis board esp. when calculating for a combination.

I agree about being surprised how many people are not cheating.  Chess.com is the first online chess I've played as I've been really warned against online players cheating.  It's nice to find an online community with an ethical majority.

Nothing wrong with the analysis board, I'll often even use a physical board to examine a position.  As long as you are not getting external help it's ok.

I tend to think that cheating is a constant wherever you play. If, say,  10% of the poeple at Red Hot Pawn cheat, then it's likely that 10% +- of the people at chess.com cheat.   Unless you're drawing from a different pool of people or have unique systems in place to dissuade cheating, I see no reason to think otherwise.

I don't play well enough to worry about being cheated

Cheating is not the biggest problem in chess. Abusing is more common

Why did you resurrect this fossil?

Discussions of cheating, potential cheating, or cheat detection are not allowed in the general forums. Also, bumping old topics shouldn't really happen; new topics are better.
