Did Chess.com Upgrade the Bots???

Hey all,

Is it my imagination, or did the chess.com bots get harder overnight?  I used to be crushing the 1400, 1500, 1600 bots, and even defeated a few 1800 and one 1900 bot on my good day.  Suddenly, I'm playing 1200 and 1300 bots, and I'm getting destroyed in under 20 moves!  Either the bots got smarter, or I lost a lot of game over the last month.  Discouraging.

Hmm. It actually looks like you have won all your recent games against the bots.

Yeah, that's because I deleted all the losses.  I hate those little red ding marks on my record.

Hmm,   but if you had analyzed those games, you might have found some suggestions for improvement.

Yes, it looks like they replaced the website bots with the mobile app bots, which I don't like.
The reason why is low Elo bots punish way too hard any blunders and they are too offensive in their plays. I got a game where a 1100 elo bot saw a checkmate in 7 sacrificing 2 pieces, like that should be hard even for 2000+ ELO players to spot. On the other hand, I was struggling a lot with Sofia(2300), like lost 20 games in the website (before the change), and beat her in one go on the app (probably the new AI on the website), since she went too offensive and I managed to defend her.

Basically low Elo bots are now very punishing on your blunders, but they blunder out of nowhere, and high Elo bots might actually be a bit easier than before, which like you said, is kind of discouraging having low Elo bots making some GM moves and in other games hanging a queen for no reason, the older bots were a bit more reasonable sad.png.

Yes, the site is updating the bot settings. I don't know if they are all done or not.

Wow, thanks Mauricio.  That actually makes me feel a lot better.  I haven't been able to really study chess for the last month, and when I couldn't defeat the 1200, 1300, 1400 bots, I assumed I'd lost most of my talent.

What I've noticed is that some of the bots that are 1200 or 1300 rated are particularly good at playing certain types of games, such as Sicilian Defense positions, but they may be really weak in another area, like the Italian Game, for example

I took a 5-day vacation from chess to attend a wedding and game back and I thought I had forgotten everything about chess!  I can still beat the 1400/1500 bots, but I also got destroyed by David and Antonio bots a few times.  David has always been my nemesis, but I usually play Antonio to get a "guaranteed" win (at least most of the time).   I played Sven this morning and actually lost one.  I can't remember the last time I lost to Sven!!!   So either the bots have been improved (which is fine by me) or I am in a deep slump.  Either way, I feel like I have taken a big step backwards.

There is some obvious change in the play of bots

As mentioned above, some settings have been changing on the bots.

I think this is a good change.  If you can beat 1500 level bots at a 2-1 clip, then you should be close to a 1500 chess.com rating.  I have beaten all the bots up to 1800 and a couple of the 1900 and 2000 bots.  And I am nowhere near that level of a rating.  So, I am thinking about re-setting all my crowns back to zero and starting over with the intermediate bots.

I wonder why they were so overrated to begin with.

Maybe some 900 rated dev wanted to imagine he was actually 1500.

Emir (1000) hasn't gotten any better!!!

The bots are Komodo with skill levels and customized settings as I understand it. I believe they are moving to a newer version with slightly different settings, but I'm not 100% positive there.

I know that matching a rating level is hard, in general, and it's possible some of the other tweaks make that estimated level less accurate. I don't really think it's some dev doing it in purpose.

Just taking a cheap shot.

It would be nice to get an official comment from the devs here.  It would be nice to know if the devs actually tried make the bots closer to their listed ratings.

I know for sure that the bot settings have been updated, just not all that entails. I believe it's just a single parameter change.

That said, staff don't often post in the forums.
