Do people like it or find it annoying when you greet them in live chess?

Sometimes when playing online live chess I try to be friendly and say hi to my opponent, but often they just remain silent. Am I annoying them? Do you prefer to be greeted when you start a game? Or is it better to shut up and play?

EDIT: I meant "ONLINE" live chess.

Well, I typically play speed chess (badly) so it's a waste of time in that context. Otherwise, it seems friendly.

My experience is the same. When I went to my city's chess club at the Mechanics Institute (not actually an institute of any kind. Its a privately owned library and chess room) there were too many people I met who were not polite at all. Many guys I played acted like normal people "Hi" "Hi" "What's your name" "Nice to meet you. Let's play". But there are surprisingly many  people who are just strange awkward people who do not greet others normally. I also noticed this is a common thing with chess players in general.

Those playing using an Android browser(like me) will hardly notice any message during the game, as we need to scroll down to see the message(which I rarely do).

It's fine though in daily.

I'm new to chess, and I just ask my opponent to let me win.

It makes no difference to me if people use chat or not.  Normally they don't, and if they do it is a friendly "good game" or "wow what a sharp position" or something like that.  One time a guy screwed up his opening and started badgering me for a draw, saying he had to go eat.  LOL.

If someone wanted to throw some smack talk or other psycho tactics on me I guess I would just turn off chat, which is possible right?  I must say though that it is a BS thing to do.  Just play the friggin game.

Some people just are too introverted... they think wrong about you sad.png but i dont find it annoying! Because i'll always get a new friend grin.png

Well... the number of friends i've made from playing on livechess remains <10.... because i play the bots most of my time.

The only place you will find telling someone "hi", "good game", "good luck" etc. as being "rude" is online.  So keep that in mind.  When you aren't face to face with someone, its easy to try and come across as "rude"

If I need to go in an online game, I ask for a draw IF I have a winning position or good chances of a draw anyway. In an inferior position I would just resign if I had to go.

Yes of course.  That is why my example was an LOL.  He bungled the opening and had already lost an exchange and the right to castle by move 9.  Then he had to go eat!  He had to go eat but he didn't have to go eat 4 minutes earlier when the game started??!  I chatted back, "resign, then go eat."

He said "ok if you can live with yourself getting such a cheap win" LOL!

One time someone came to the door who I couldn't ignore.  I was definitely ahead in my game and messaged to my opponent, "someone is here I have to go.  Draw ok?"  And he accepted which was cool.  Obviously, a slimier person could have said no, knowing I would have had to abandon and lose.

If I was obviously behind, I wouldn't have even asked I would have resigned.

Five minutes to play a whole game doesn't leave much time for chat, but if it's the opponent's move and he doesn't do anything for 30 seconds, I might say something.  Last night I asked a guy "How's the weather in Namibia?"  In the past, I have asked questions like "Is it true that the women in your country can get pregnant just by holding hands?"

That's so witty!

I do think a friendly greeting and then a "good game" at the end is good, so that is what I do.

ItsTheSPAHfromTF2

I enjoy a nice hello, but I'm <600 points so no one wants my opinion

Just to clarify for everyone, by "Live" I meant vs daily chess. It's all still online.

I think its fine.  just being amiable is not rude in any way.  if they don't respond and you aggressively insist on chatting with them when they are just trying to ignore you then that would be rude.  maybe they got harassed and just don't want to deal with it, or whatever.  some people just don't wanna talk or aren't even paying attention.  doesn't hurt to reach out though.
