If Elon is such a good businessman, why did he have to crawl with hat in hand to the Saudis when he lacked the cash to buy Twitter for the price he offered?

Why did Twitter lose 75% of its value after he bought it?

Because that's how business works. Not every venture is going to be a big winner. Most people in business fail a LOT before they succeed. Also, it's very common for a business to borrow money for purchases.

I recall a comment by, I think Warren Buffet, who said basically if he were to buy a house he would use a 30 year mortgage to do it. Obviously he can afford to buy a thousand houses and pay cash, but he would finance even one. Because of the deductions it makes more fiscal sense to do it that way.

Remember, a smart business person isn't always going to agree with what you or I think they should do.

Bro you can't chalk it up to "that's how business works " the difference it was already a relatively successful company being rich doesn't make you automatically smarter but it lessens the damage done by ALOT

Except that in this country it's pretty rare to find someone genuinely smart that is poor.

A fool and his money are soon parted, which is why it's also quite rare to find someone stupid and rich.

Why isn't this locked? It's nothing but Elon hate at this point. Hardly productive.

I’ve known dozens of extremely intelligent people who were struggling after various forms of debt obligations. Medical debt is the #1 cause of bankruptcy in the United States.

But yeah, getting denied by an insurance company is surely stupid 🙄

Millions of people are laid off or fired at an age considered “too old to hire” by so many HR departments. Without help from family or cashing out retirement accounts, many face bankruptcy. Unemployment only goes so far and has time limits.

I’m lucky to have a cushion of a small inheritance and dual citizenship with a far superior country in terms of social benefits. Not everyone has both or even one of those options.

Twitter lost 75% of its value because advertisers left en masse.

Soooo many people left entirely once millions of fake accounts were created after the purchase.

That's because not every business venture makes money. Some do not. How much is Tesla worth? How much is SpaceX worth? How much is Paypal worth? How much is open AI or Neuralink worth? How much is the Boring company worth?

Haven't you ever bought something, even business related, not to make money, but to have it for personal reasons? I know I have. Say you want a particular car for your company. You know you don't need it, you just WANT it. And you know you'll write off the losses but it doesn't matter, you want it anyway.

Elon musk doesn’t sell his pair of jeans for 40K

Elon musk is more of an Entrepreneur, not a master of a specific field. Magnus is the LeBron of chess

PayPal isn't a good reference they got caught owning a company stealing money from everyone recently

I'm not even sure how this contributed to the conversation anyway there's not really a point besides "companies are rich and people want things " there's also a difference between buying something that's 10'000-100'000 because you want it and something that costs 300'000'000 nobody in their right mind needs to spend that much money for something just cause they want it

@IfPatriotGames Seriously? Do you even know the details? This is just one book review. All the information is out there in many articles.

That's just your opinion though. People might want things or buy things you do not approve of. They might have different priorities than you. I agree he didn't NEED Twitter. But he wanted it.

The question is whether or not Magnus is the Elon Musk of chess. Since their pursuits are so very different it's not a very good comparison. As someone else said, Magnus is a chess player, Elon is an entrepreneur. They are the best at what they do, it's just that what they do is very different. So no, Magnus is probably not the Elon Musk of chess because Magnus has not accomplished anything that compares to what Elon Musk has accomplished.

I didn't say whether or not X is worth more or less than when he bought it. I said sometimes people buy things because they WANT them, not because they need them. Elon Musk did not NEED Twitter.

My example is like buying a car for your business. You may not NEED a new 100k Cadillac Escalade to haul around your briefcase. But you want it. Even though you know it will instantly go down in value. It's a loss you are willing to accept because you want it. It's just business.

The question the OP asks most likely has to do with the respective level of fame and accomplishments of each. It's really pointless to focus on minutia or perceived flaws of each and compare JUST those flaws. Otherwise we could say no, Magnus is not the Elon Musk of chess because Magnus has bad breath. Elon doesn't. Do you see how silly that sounds?

You obviously aren’t comprehending.

Magnus has a record of being extremely good at chess. To my knowledge he’s done nothing odious to people who work for him, is not publicly abusive to those with no funds to spare for legal action, and he’s not a fascist.

Musk has a record of running businesses into the ground and obtaining government contracts that are tainted by conflicts of interest, among other issues. He’s been saved from bankruptcy by harvesting subsidies. He’s left municipalities in the lurch with incomplete projects. He’s a deadbeat dad who deliberately chose only male embryos for implantation, only to treat an effeminate son with hostility until she came out as trans, at which point he rejected her outright. He manipulates his baby mamas with legal maneuvers and withholding of child support. This list is incomplete.

This is it for my posts on the thread. I presented plenty of examples for anyone to read. There’s far more out in the real world, whether business or technology or general interest.
