Does a chess.com have any green commitments?

Considering China is using more coal than ever I would worry about them first considering they are the dirtiest country around

i think this website is online so why does it have to be green??
It doesn’t have to be, but as one of the biggest representatives of the chess world it definitely has some responsibility, at least to spread awareness. I’m not saying chess com has a bad impact relative to all the others sources of carbon… but it could have a positive impact?

Or maybe on Earth Day they could make the site look different… bring out a climate themed chess board. I think there needs to be at least some acknowledgment.

Whether climate change is happening and whether it will have disastrous consequences is not up for debate. Climate denial is not in any way a defensible position. I just was hoping for a positive discussion on what actions chess.com could take. Your comment has shown how important raising awareness is though…

That's very true, but they also have significantly lower Per Capita emissions than nations like the United States, Russia, and various other European, Asian, and Middle Eastern states (Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research).
What I think is particularly significant is that China invested 890bn USD into clean energy and EV in 2023. It accounted for all of growth in investment and 40% of GDP growth. In fact, China would've missed its 5% GDP growth target if not for their clean energy boom. The returns on their investments are also growing 30% every year. With that, general clean energy capacity in all sectors grew at rates never seen before, as did the manufacturing capacity (CarbonBrief).
This is fueling speculations across various media outlets that China's taking advantage of (comparatively) low investments from other economic powers such as the USA and the EU, and is thus attempting to dominate the growing industry going into the coming decades. Given that most of their investments are currently used internally, China may also be taking advantage of the plummeting long-term prices of green energy and EV's in general.

Agreed! Given that chess.com has millions that use it every day, rolling out some sort of commitment or theme would make a big impact. As long as they're not "greenwashing" lol.

Thanks for engaging with this! It feels like a long time since I made the thread but I still feel the same way. Chess com could make a very positive impact — there is rampant climate denial online even though the fact that there is a need to address the climate crisis really should be an apolitical issue not a divisive one!

Absolutely! I was looking a few days ago for any green commitments as well, given that there are 150,000,000+ members. I was very surprised not to find much!

Doing a server cleanup would go a very long way, and Google did something similar with Gmail a few months back.
Most people accept climate change is a global emergency. Therefore all parts of society need to respond in some way. I was wondering if chess.com has any green pledges… and if not, why not? For example do the servers run on renewable energy? At least there should be some articles to raise awareness…?
