It may be true, but no need to say it only to destroy people's passion and commitment. Don't cut off wings, no matter how small they are.
Don't dream becoming a GM

He's not wrong. And because of the effect of big money, if you're not in the pipeline of any game/sport by the time you're 8 years old, you're likely not gonna be a professional at any game/sport. There are outliers, but by definition, they are rare.

It's funny i see people planning to study chess and dreaming of becoming GM..
One will have to tell you.. that everyone has an in-born ability, it's almost over once you hit your plateau.. you can only achieve average ratings and with any kind of hard study you can only become A class player max. maybe.. not a master..
eh.. its not even enough to born with it, you will still have to study to get it in your hands.. but without that ability.. dont even bother.
wake up and smell the coffee.. have fun and stop tilting and punching your pc..
i did my part for the community.. you are welcome
I know. A chess player's goal should be the best they can be, even if it is only 1000. As long as chess is not stressful and you enjoy being a part of this community, you are a great chess player.

@brmk91, I love taking advice from a 1300 :0, but on a real note, that is completely incorrect. I started playing competitively as a 1000, and over 3–4 years, I gained over 1200 elo. My goal (reachable if I continue studying) is to reach 2400 before 18 yrs old.
you have a maximum rating in you, you wont see it till you get there. lets say it's 2200-2300 and you will stop there, your progress is an illusion, that was your set destination from the beginning.. which is called 'potential'
you said you reached there in a few years, that is nothing.. more than learning the game and getting some exprience.. you got there without real setbacks and difficulties. that was your normal and you didnt know it.
okay.. look around and see those IMs all around the world, they only need +100 elo to become a Grandmaster, they all stay there forever. Why? Talk to Levy, aka gothamchess.. ask why he just cant.. he is playing chess for living.. no other business.
ps: my rating has nothing to do with this, this is an observation.. which I've been doing more than 20 years.

Don't tell people what to do.
this is a self-contradicting sentence, as you are telling me what to do..
but seriously, I did my part and warned people, some said something about hopes and lottery.. wrong analogy, lottery doesn't waste your time, but going after a false hope can take your years.. it's up to you listen or.. just not.
Alright, i spared enoguh time for this, good bye.

Ur still a 1300 you don't know the higher levels of play.

I feel honored when i see
- downvotes
- ur 1300 m8 u dnt kno bro
- don't destroy people's dreams
- ...
since i explained myself but haven't seen any significant argument in return. I mostly love the downvotes given from the shadows by the people who have nothing to say about anything.
I know it's hard to admit when someone said "you can't" it simply triggers your defence mechanism. But in time you will come around and will have to accept the truth, when there is nothing else left to do.

And as I said before their dream can be their motivation and drive towards becoming better at the game, it's not about becoming the best. It's not bad to have dreams and goals in life. Just because you are such a pessimistic downer doesn't mean everyone else has to be.

you are mixing up things.
I have points and you have ad-hominems.. I'm expecting arguments about the subject. You keep 'naming' things.
what you miss is in the first post, read it more carefuly, I told you could be an A Class player by studying, you can even make progress till reaching to your true potential. But mastery is something else.
You take it as 'you can't do anything'. You can do many things but you can not be a master if you haven't already by now.

Really? I want to become GM one day. That's like saying don't dream of winning the lottery, because people will bother you non stop
Lottery is based on luck but becoming GM isn't

Perhaps it is just best for people to figure out what you are trying to say by themselves: Let them find out the truth of trying to climb the rating ladder to be a Grandmaster.
I agree with the facts that you stated. For most people it's not worth persuing a chess title, let alone grandmaster, and you just told them that. It's just the way you said it that said it made it seem like you are crushing their dreams, similar to a mother that told her child that Santa isn't real. It's the harsh reality.

It's an often-touted claim that chess masters must be born with their talents. But there's no scientific evidence I'm aware of that declares that anyone is born with chess ability.
Chess ability is clearly a learned skill - not a genetic predisposition.
True, to reach a high level of play, one needs several pieces to line up along the way in their life. But being born with any sort of pre-defined chess potential isn't one of them.
What one generally needs to reach a master's level of play:
- Early exposure to the game (the earlier you start, the better)
- A love of the game that borders on obsession (to get good at this game, you'll need a relentless drive to put in countless hours of study and practice)
- High-level instruction (if you truly want to excel at the game, you'll want some sort of professional guidance and/or coaching along the way).
- Opportunities to meet with, and compete against, experienced players ...
- The opportunity to pursue chess to the exclusion of most other activities ...
For most players, many (or even all) of these pieces won't be in place. This, IMO, is the main reason why chess mastery remains so elusive.
@1
"everyone has an in-born ability" ++ No, as Lazlo Pogar has demonstrated with his 3 daughters any child has the potential.
"once you hit your plateau" ++ A plateau shows the inability to make further progress: to identify and cure weaknesses. That is mostly a motivational problem, not an intellectual shortcoming of the brain. People get lazy rather than stupid.
"with any kind of hard study you can only become A class player max. maybe.. not a master"
++ No. Anybody starting young can become a grandmaster, as Lazlo Polgar has demonstrated.
"you will still have to study to get it in your hands" ++ That is the point.

I think it's better for someone to have their 'dreams crushed' then to stress themselves into an early grave trying to be a GM.
