A precariously posted pachyderm.

Just a twist of fate 😝 Coincidence has always been funnier than the bunny.

Can understand why nobody else wanted to ride at the same time.

In the bunny's unsolicited opinion, @martin_stahl is one of the really good mods here but we cannot truly improve until we face facts about the site's current state and possibly misguided directions.

the term torn and broken comes to mind.

In chess.com's defense, I think they're aware that more and more kids are using the forums. And I mean little kids. Under 10 even.

So one option would be to pay at least some full time mods (maybe there are some right now? But I don't know if that's their main job) to enforce a certain quality of posting. For example all the crap like "add 3 words to the story" topics would be gone. People who post "hmm" would be warned and then muted. Stuff like that.

But that takes a lot of effort, and chess is, after all, a board game that's popular with kids. So another option is this auto mod stuff that makes sure the truly young children aren't scared off by naughty words like "darn" and "fooey."

Now it's a perfectly reasonable business strategy, but what's personally annoying to me about catering to kids is the forums become rubbish. For example imagine a serious minded newcomer who wants to talk about chess, but sees an endless sea of pokemon avatars posting nonsense. They're not going to give the forums a 2nd look.

Personally, I have trouble differentiating between most videos / images posted by little kids and adults (or some of the thread topics) . So I'm hesitant to ascribe the problem specifically to the presence of children.

I find there is not enough redneck content like Barbie jeep racing, still its the internet, forums are not that efficient a vehicle for expression anyway.  Hardly anyone ever changes their perspective after a "discussion".

Can't pour anything new into a vessel that's already full.

Chess is just like football........you have to shake hands. wink.png

Yeah, I agree. It's hard to tell the difference between a fun loving adult and a fun loving kid.

And maybe it just comes down to fact that kids relate well to kids, and adults relate well to adults.

But I have to say posts like these (below) are a pet peeve of mine. If I were made king people who post like this often would be tossed out real fast.

its a great pity, off topic used to be great, now it is festooned with low effort posts.

I agree, Robbie. Off-Topic by virtue of being the last and only resort has become little more than a catch-all. And that's indeed a sad result. I wish there was a separate place -with a nicer name than Trash Forum- to put the plethora of nonsense..  but without direction or clarification from the higher muckamucks, in order to keep these childish and non-chess theads off the main floor, that's the only current solution, as poor as it might be.

Btw, you are highlighted (somewhat) in my latest (non-chess) blog article.

This was in the notes section of a private club.  Threads are disappearing, people are being automuted, sure its a tricky business but testing should be done on a remote system and only transferred to live when all scenarios have been considered bug free.

Looks like you were temporarily muted.

thanks for chiming in by letting everyone know it was temporary (hint: all mutes are temporary).

your post is rather useless, though, as it appears you are attempting to explain away a site failure by saying, "well, the muting was only for a short time". it's still wrong.

you should utilize your position as a mod in better ways.

Well, there are less temporary mutes wink.png

The reply was in regards to why there was the message about being unable to post in a club notes; by the time I looked at it, the mute was expired. I wasn't making excuses for the why of it. Context is important there.

Why are forums like this allowed to exist?

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/off-topic/quack

You could ban everyone who posted in that forums and we'd be better for it.
