I'd vote yes, but only if the block functionality could be changed so that blocking someone from the Instant Messenger didn't block them altogether. Perhaps an allow/deny type structure to govern who you will and will not accept instant messages from that is seperate (but updated by) the existing block user functionality.
FEEDBACK: Should we add Chat / Instant Messenger on Chess.com?
Absolutely! Very modern innovation that would really make chess.com that much more amazing. Seemingly similar to the FaceBook bar, as you mentioned, I think it would definitely be a positive addition to the page.
It's not for me but it sounds like an obvious improvement and a real extension to what chess.com provides. I expect I'll turn it off but if it appeals to a lot of users (which I believe it will) then it should be added.
The more (genuinely useful) functionality chess.com offers the more attractive it's going to be to new users.
The thing is, I don't think this is genuinely useful at all. We have notes, we have messages, why does it matter if they take 5 sec. or 25 sec. to respond?
well put. the thing is that people won't be using this to talk about the game. because if they were, they would be using the live chat (for live chess) and the offline chess chat box (for offline chess). though some people might use it once in a while, i doubt there will be enough volume to justify the hassle to everyone else.
as an analogy, i'd also doubt too many people who have a facebook account use facebook chat on a regular basis. and that's a social networking site!
Facebook also has wall posts, messages and instant messenger and all three serve a different purpose. Sure there's overlap, but I wouldn't call it redundancy.
I like it :)
I think that's missing from chess.com is a quicker way to communicate with your new chess friends.
strani is right
Meh, not very interested. I don't really get into this multi-function-app frenzy; I already have an IM client that works perfectly fine if I choose. I certainly do NOT want my friends to be constantly popping up with "how u doin" when I'm trying to analyze a position. I would rather see the dev time focused elsewhere, on chess-centric features.
Honestly, are Messages, Notes, Email, and in-game Chat not sufficient for communicating already? How many different ways do you need? Why does it NEED to be even more immediate?
It strikes me that this could be a replacement for the chat in Live Chess 2.0 altogether. Does the third-party software support multi-party chats?
Great idea
Please do not make it too complex (in software language code) because then it risks timeouts on page loading times.
You should update forums so polls can be used..
therefore people can vote yes or no.
I vote yes if its for paying members only. (Another thing that makes people want to get premium)
I think it is a nice idea. Anything that simplifies life - [in this case, communication] - is a nice idea to me. I had wanted to ask about that - may be did, but I didn't think it was a priority considering all the things you had going way back when.
Keep up the good work!

I am in agreement with this person. Most people come here to play chess, and use contexual chat to be polite or show good sportsmanship. The game was not designed for chatters.
