I just went to that website and tried it with and without scripts.  Without scripts the page is fine.  Turn on the scripts (necessary for the chat bar) and it becomes a horrible bloated page.  You can see the difference just scrolling the page with and without allowing scripts from cafemom.com with noscript.

of course, firefox is a buggy piece of junk so it could be that, but performance is unsatisfactory in ie8 too, albeit less so.

how do you turn scripts off?

Use Firefox to browse internet, and install NoScript addon - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722.

I guess it's a good idea to add IM

With that news, clearly it is good. There is no downside at all.

Sounds a great feature.

Ok gang, how do we configure noscript to block ads and the meebo chat cluster without blocking the chess pieces on the chess.com pages?

Is it possible?

Yes, you press the NoScript symbol (blue or red S letter depending on whether its on or off) on the bottom right of the screen and it lets you choose which pages to allow and which to block. For the pieces to be seen, you need to allow chess.com and chesscomfiles.com, other can be block if i'm not mistaken. To block the chat, you will need to block meebo.

Here's how it looks from my computer:

Yes, I love the idea!

Your response is far from instant....

pvmike

yes

SirValence

I'd go for it.  If it becomes a problem could we get out of the deal with meebo quickly or would we be locked in?

Puchiko

Looks like this feature is now  a fact. I don't mind it, as you can turn it off for everything but your home page.

If you want to remove it, click your friends bar, and then set your status to "sign off chat". Then just Click the down arrow that appears in the bottom right. :)

No, if we wanted to instant message we would go to MSN or maybe even live chess but not on chess.com forums.

calwum

it's okay i guess

This is the FAQ Help page for the new chat feature.
