Forum Nonsense!

Sort:
Doggy_Style

Once again, I am faced by the following nonsense:

It seems to me that this sort of thing will be greatly reduced if a forum qualification is instituted.

My proposal runs as follows.

No forum posting until:

1. Ten games of Online Chess have been played.

or

2. Twenty games of Live Chess have been played.

or

3. One month's membership.

(The chosen figures are arbitrary)

It wouldn't completely stamp out the spammers, and those only here to stir the pot, but it will reduce their numbers, in my opinion.

Thoughts?

I doubt that would make a difference at all, needs to be a lot stricter :p

Okay, I think I covered the "strictness angle":

(The chosen figures are arbitrary)

As a concept, do you think this would be beneficial to the good order of the forums?

Ruby-Fischer

Something needs to be done thats for sure.

Maybe the one months membership idea would improve things.

I don't think so. I can't see spammers playing chess or paying just to post. They would move elsewhere.

What about this : With every finished game you earn posting-points so you can either start or respond to threads.

We need to be careful not to exclude valued contributors, who have never played (e.g. goldendog).

Wizard_Esk

When you look at the amount of games some people have played and the types of questions they still ask... It seems some people never learn anything. I think having some standard posts about tactics/can I be a GM etc so that everytime someone posts rubbish it can be deleted and they can be linked to the post.

Wizard_Esk

Perhaps a sub forum specifically for sport related stuff!

Easier might be to limit how often a person can post in their first month or whatever, like once an hour

Good thinking.

They are spamming, with links to another site.

Those posts are not created by bona fide members of this site.

Maybe the one day trollers could be rounded up, and be given a fake passport and ID and head off to that escort agency in Dubai....

Given that spammers always make new threads(at least from what I've seen), a limit on the number of threads a person can start per day.  I mean, I don't know a lot about usual forum-goers here, but are there people who make more than say... 10 threads a day?

Once one comes to realize that the forums are mostly just a social event, then it becomes clear that "good order" (whatever that is) is irrelevant.

The poignancy is that when I want intelligent, rational, quiet...I play.

When I want to learn...I read a book or do tactical puzzles.

When I tire of those and am "up to my gills" with thinking...then I go to the forums where there is plenty of stupidity and smack talk.

If you can accept what I just said, then the forums may not upset you so much.

Excellent point!  Most people in the forums don't come here for serious chess discussions -- they're here for simple entertainment.  This reminds of me of a piece of wisdom I figured out in my youth: "Don't expect much from people, and you'll be less disappointed."

That being said, chess.com could at least have a moderator look at new topics before they go live, to filter out blatant non-chess adertisements (even primitive yahoo groups routinely do this).

True, I'm speaking of the types who ask daft questions though which is slightly off topic but still spam in my mind. I think chessgg has it right. The forums unfortunately, or fortunately, depending how bored you are :p are mainly full of drama. I agree with a certain number of posts per day, unless you are a paying member. Or perhaps ONLY for paying members. A member privilege!

TurboFish

How about keeping the forum as it is?  Let's reconcile ourseles to the fact that many carbon-based-units want or need chaos and drama in the forum.  Don't raise barriers to nonpaying members who want to ask sincere chess questions or share their relevant experiences.

But create a separate forum accessible only to paying members.  Consider it a reward to those who partially subsidize this site.  Of course paying members can cause trouble in the "premium forum", but having to pay for that privilege will keep misbehavior to a minimum.

I am relatively new to CC but hear a lot about the good-old-days when the forums were a delight. So , what is so different now ?

I think this topic is a tough cookie. We want to keep it democratic don't we ? So it looks like we have to live with it.
