Forum Topics Disappearing?

I was posting in a forum topic a few minutes ago and the topic just vanished. I won't repeat what topic it was because it probably shouldn't have been there anyway but I was suprised to see it gone. Is it the new policy to just delete controversial topics instead of locking them? I'm just curious.

I know you were talking about the advertisement for a gay chess group. Why shouldn't it have been there? I will repeat what I said in the topic: It's only controversial for homophobic blowhards who are not worth giving the time of day.

Chess.com seems to always take the decision to delete such topics about a gay tournament or group. Personally I think it's quite deplorable.

Yup, happens occasionally.

btw I don't think the deleted topic was controversial in the least.

I didn't mean it shouldn't be there because it controversial. Your right. There was nothing wrong with the original forum post. I completely forgot how the forum started in the first place and I was just thinking of all the whining and discriminating going on. It turned into some troll forum. I stand corrected. I still don't understand why it was deleted.

When peoples' accounts get closed, their threads get deleted too. I never liked that rule. Maybe that was why?

Wasn't the creator of the thread called gayknight? Their account is still open.

If you think this is big brother you obviously haven't been on gameknot.com. Smile

"A lot of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. But you gotta do it right. I mean, you gotta have the hole already dug before you show up with a package in the trunk. Otherwise, you're talking about a half-hour to forty-five minutes worth of digging. And who knows who's gonna come along in that time Pretty soon, you gotta dig a few more holes. You could be there all night."

Chess.com is best enjoyed when topics focus on CHESS period. No additional preferences, leaders, choices etc.. You can see where the bloggers, tweeters, facebook etc. have expanded to a massive undertaking. Let's try to keep our site simple and crisp. Chess please! Only Chess! We all benefit and grow the game of Chess.

This is not the direction the site wants to take though. They make it clear their focus is on niche social networking...

Good thing we can all choose what we want!

Agreed -- this is a social site that's centred around chess but that doesn't mean that it's for chess to the exclusion of everything else.  As long as it's kept friendly, respectful and clean anything should be acceptable here.

I didn't see the original thread, but I have my doubts that the original thread was deleted by an overzealous administrator based on the original intent of the thread (I've seen a number of similar threads here and they've all been rightly left alone).  Could it possibly have been some of the subsequent comments that caused the thread to take a turn for the worse and caused its deletion to be warranted?

Chess.com isnt gay friendly?!

Then im gonna leave this site, it was nice knowing everyone.

Just kidding.. but seriously, why would someone make a topic about a gay group?

I wonder if the gay group is closed?

EDIT: It is not closed.. here it is! http://www.chess.com/groups/view/gay-chess-players  i know a couple of people who need to join it.

No, it's not, and none of the dozens of other similarly themed threads have been deleted either.  I think that the allegation that chess.com is not "gay friendly" based on this one incident, about which the actual underlying reason for the thread's deletion is not known, is a rash and unfair characterization.

Ok, it was probably unfair of me as well to say that chess.com's usual stance is to delete something like that. I'll admit I've only seen 2 threads apart from that one advertising a gay tournament or group and both were deleted. In both there were lots of nasty homophobic comments in them though. But then again I'm still puzzled as to why no action was taken against the individuals and that the threads were deleted instead of the usual "lock". I know this will possibly cause a stir but homophobia seems to be tolerated more than something like racism here...

Edit: Actually I'm no longer puzzled about the deletion part, I've read again AnthonyCG's comment. But I still mean what I say with the last sentence.

For the same reasons someone would want to make a topic about any group. You're very young and have yet to develop a mature perspective on homosexuality.

Avatar of munchkin

Some of the comments in the deleted thread were nasty and homophobic but there were also people rationally discussing the subject as well. It did get off its original topic though. Many of the forums seem to lose track of their original intent though and they do not usually get deleted.

Avatar of TheGrobe

It sounds like it might have been best to delete the offending comments and warn the users who made them, but it's possible that the thread was so far gone by the time a moderator came across it that it was just easier to delete it altogether.

You can't do that anymore.
