Do you converse with your opponents?

artfizz

It does seem a relatively common experience, to judge from past discussions

However, as a greeter, you are perhaps the first contact with chess.com that these newcomers see. That is why a lot of thought has gone into First Contact protocol - to try to avoid misunderstandings.

here is a touching story that might help you feel better:

a man went to the beach one early morning and noticed thousands of starfish washed up on the shore that were dying from exposure. it was paralyzingly sad to see and he was just about to turn around and leave when he spotted a woman walking down the beach throwing starfish after starfish back into the sea. the man walked over to the woman and said "what are you doing? there are 10,000 starfish dying here and you're tossing a few back in. that doesn't make any difference." she picked up a starfish and threw it into the ocean and replied, "it did for that one."

ok, it's a cheesy story, but there have been a number of people who have really appreciated their introduction to the site through greeter games. i prefer to think of it in quantity of people who enjoy their first greeter game, not in terms of % of games finished. :)

Count me among those who appreciated the greeter game.  Shout out to CHESSNOID who was a really classy first opponent, offered a rematch, and then a rated rematch even though he knew my 1200 rating was innacurate.

I too offered to play as greeter but never got a game to play !!
