How do know if my opponent is in vacation mode?

Greetings.  I started my very first game ever of daily chess last night.  I played 1 d4, and as of this morning there was no response, and I *think* his time remaining was 12 hours.  I just checked now, and he still has not made a move, but his time remaining is 24 hours.  Does that mean he invoked "vacation"?  Is there a way to check?

I just checked and his time is down to 8 hours, so that 24 hours seems like a bug.  Of course both of you being premium members, if either runs out of time then vacation will kick in automatically.  If I remember correctly, the phrase "on vacation" replaces how much time he has left if he goes on vacation (either by choice or automatically).  Hope that helps...

Might be something in the help article of interest...

When going on vacation, the system automatically deducts 24 hours from the player's vacation bank. It the player comes off vacation before that 24 hours has elapsed, the difference gets added to the clock for each game where's the player is on the move, up to the time control.

So, in this case, unless the opponent immediately went on vacation after your move, they were very likely placed on vacation automatically by the system when low on time in another game.

Huh -- now it's down to 8 hours for me, too.  (Perhaps it was an open tab that I never refreshed?  I dunno).  Thanks.

OK, thanks, this is new information to me.  Thanks.  (As I just noted, for whatever reason, he's now at 8 hours -- probably error on my part (an old tab that I didn't refresh?))

Nevertheless, is there any way to tell: (a) if a player has invoked vacation; and (b) how much vacation time somebody else has in the bank?

Thanks, all!

each time you move you get all your time back. I often have around less than 24 hours on my games before I make a move. Then I get all my time back. Which is why the 14 day vienna thematic tournament still hasn't ended...

If a player is on vacation, there will be information on the info tab of the game on how much time they have. The only way you'll know if they had went on and back off, is if you saw it or they had time added to the clock. Though, if you weren't on for a day then you may also see they have more time than you expected them to have.

OK -- thanks, I will check that out.  Right now when I click on info it just says: Started: Mar 7; Time 1 day; Variant: Standard.  So you're saying there would be more there if he were on vacation?

BTW, for anybody following this thread and who is on pins a needles about this intense game (insert a facetious emoji here) . . . he just made his first reply!  (1...d5)  What a wild game so far! <g>

You'll get a postcard "Having a great time; wish you were here."

Doesn't a sentence something like "Mr. X is on vacation and has 17 days left, but may be back sooner" show up instead of the time left?  I seem to remember something like that but with my rapidly deteriorating short term memory and chess.com's penchant for change, I can't be sure.

Oh, and good one batgirl....wink.png

Well . . . I'll see if that happens to me!  (That reply works for both baddogno and batgirl!)

Thanks,

I've seen pause icon on some daily games before. maybe it indicates one of player is in vacation mode.

OK -- so now I know the answer to my question because it happened to me.

It was my opponents move in daily chess, and after at least 23 hours (perhaps 24) I saw that the game was in Vacation mode (instead of the time remaining up top, it said "Vacation").  Further, when I clicked on Vacation, it said "36 hours of vacation remaining"

Thanks, all!

@batgirl -- Alas, I didn't get a postcard.  Maybe the mail is slow . . .
