How does the chess.com rating works?
thanks for the article, this describes everything. In my games today I'm feeling that it's getting tougher and tougher ![]()
What denotes a draw... played opponent gathered 23 points with 7 of my tokens and then left with king.. I closed in on taking their king then game closed with a draw... what the hell?
In your last draw, it was your opponent's move, they were not in check, and they had no legal moves. That is a draw by stalemate.

"23 points"? "Tokens"?
Are you sure you are talking about chess? This sounds like another game to me.
I've had a lot of experience with this. When you have just signed in, your rating will not be shown, until you have played a few games. You start your rating with 400. At this point, I don't know why, but chess.com designed it to increase or decrease quite painfully. (e.g. win+231/ draw+69/ lose-372) This clearly is not fair for beginners, who have just leant chess. Unfortunately for the other people, who has played for a long time, is a lot more difficult to increase their rating (for absolutely no reason) (e.g. win+8/ draw+0/ lose-8). Compared to the first few games, you can see the gigantic difference. I would appreciate it if chess.com members could allow players to change this freely. (please chess.com staff!!)

When creating an account you can choose your strength which sets a starting rating. The site also uses the Glicko rating system that includes a measure of rating uncertainty called the rating deviation (RD) value.
Accounts with few games in a pool will have a high RD value and see larger rating swings initially. The whole point is to quickly get a player close to the correct rating for their strength within a pool. As more games are played, that RD value will decrease as will the magnitude of rating changes.
The rating system is unlikely to change.
Hi everybody,
3 days ago, I have started my journey here in chess.com after watching a lot of youtube content. Before that I have been playing on the board or online platforms, where you don't need to sign up...so basically just for fun.
Now I have created my YouTube channel and I'm aiming for 1500 rating which I think is very difficult. However, I reached after 15 games (including 1 loss) to 1224 and here I'm a little confused. I have checked my videos and in some games there is this kind of rating: win +59 / draw +4 / lose -51. Is this rating normal? How does this rating works?
