How long ago did you start playing chess?

59 years ago. My Dad. This was not serious play at first, although he did teach us kids important things like en passant. When I was a teenager I played in some tournaments. No, I was not a genius, I just liked it. But college followed by a demanding job intervened, and I drifted away from it. I'm returning to chess after 47 years, and everything has changed. Digital chess clocks, time increments, chess engines, methods of teaching - all new. I especially like the tactical puzzles here, and even the lessons for beginners have viewpoints I hadn't seen way back then

Wow 🤯

My dad taught me a few years ago, was a likkle kid then and got bored easily lol... Then my friend recommended this website to me and I got back into chess about a week ago

Chess for me, began 71 years ago in 1951, when I was 13, on a boring foggy San Francisco summer day. Â Six friends and I got several chess books at the library and learned to move the pieces.
We used a red and black checker board and cheap plastic hollow pieces that always fell over all the time. They came in a forty game box. Only Bill my best friend took to playing chess regularly.
I played in a playground tournament and won my matches easily because they barely knew how to move the pieces.
In the semi-final games at the 19th avenue park, I lost badly.

RICH at 14 YEARS OLD IN MY SUNDAY BEST

I began playing chess 19 years ago when I was 23. A smart guy showed me the game & I thought if he plays this it must have value. I was correct.

1967. That's 56 years ago.
I was 11 years old. One of my teachers taught me to play.
I'm just a spring chicken compared to RichColorado.
I played with my parents and friends when I was a kid, so, over 25 years ago. Then I got bored and stopped playing for probably 20 years, playing once in a while against a computer. I was never good at it, losing to a computer at even the lower settings. It's a bit easier to play against a human (obviously not a very high rated one) because computers usually do not make mistakes.

I learnt to play chess when I was about 8-9 years old. That means about 40 years ago. I can't for the love of me remember who taught me the rules and who was my first opponent. Maybe my dad, maybe one of my friends. Since my dad passed away and I am not in touch with any of my childhood friends, I will never know.
