How old were you when you learned how to play chess and what attracted you to ♟ chess.

As a child, my sisters and I were required to learn three skills - swimming 🏊🏼‍♀️(I’m from L.A.), riding a bicycle 🚲 and . . .you guessed it, playing chess. My mother who had a major passion for the game(and an impressive ♟ set collection!) taught me at the age of 10. I love the aspect of planning at least 6 moves ahead and I’ve always loved confusing opponents with my atypical moves.

I only learned at the age of 25! I actively tried it as a way to alleviate my intense anxiety. And it worked. I was hooked

I took up woodworking as a hobby in retirement and started making things for family members. We have several grandkids who play chess so I made a couple chessboards (very fun project) and that rekindled a decades old interest. I've never played seriously until a few months ago when I discovered chess.com. So....I learned as a kid how the pieces move, etc, and played various friends and family periodically, but never learned any real tactics, openings, etc until 2022.

Gorbachocolate, what exactly do you mean by ur comment?🤔

Pegusu

Gorbachocolate,   I forwarded both of your comments to chess.com so at least, for a couple of days, the REAL commentators will get a break from you.  Everyone else, u can thank me later!  And u are blocked from any of my future threads.

I was 26 (28 now). I played my dad at chess, and he beat me. Well actually, he beat himself because after the third move, he just started moving my pieces for me because apparently "you're already in a losing positon so what you should have done is..." and then he proceeded to play a full game against himself all while mumbling under his breath over what moves to play.

Well I'm pretty competitive so I studied chess with the aim to utterly crush him. Six months later we're pretty even. My goal is to make sure he gets crushed so hard that I start moving his pieces for him.

Have a wonderful day, Bailarinadesarda.

Pegusu

Are u a positive person, Bailarinadesarda? My name is Pegusu yet u keep calling me Karen.  I’m sure you’re a gentleman.

Pegusu

And OldSpooky, you ARE THE BEST, a true Texas gentleman!!!🤗☺️🤗

I started learning when I was 8, and starting it taking it seriously at the age of 11.

Pegusu

Absolutely! How are you, TheRealjonahhill?

Pegusu

I’ve beaten cancer three times - this is NOTHING!

And if being a Karen means that I’m entitled to being treated decently, then a Karen I be!  And I will treat you with the same consideration.

Knights_of_Doom

I don't remember learning - my dad taught me as I was growing up and could understand things.  Started with setting up the pieces, apparently I was 2 or 3 for that.  But we both really got into it during the Fischer-Spassky match.

Pegusu

Pegusu here.   I’d like to apologize for the brouhaha that erupted here last night(California time).  The trolls invaded this forum but no worries, they’ve been banished!   Now, back to our topic.  Wow, Knights_of_Doom, your dad started teaching you to love chess at the tender age of 3.  I thought I was young when my mom started teaching me!  Love these ambitious parents! Look forward to hearing from other folks who want to share their stories.❤️♟❤️♟❤️♟

Mike_Kalish

@Pegusu... Thanks for making this a troll free zone!

Pegusu

My pleasure, mikekalish! Gotta keep fighting the good fight!🙏
