xhitman9 makes a good point. If you play an honest game, you'll learn from your losses (even if your opponent used a computer) and be better when you play face to face.

I really like some of these forums

this computer aided chess thing is a real live wire

automatic detection?

can you be sure? like absolutely? re zeeyee comments

I am no where near so good in live as turn based myself and would never reference books or computer progs during a game and I know I don't cheat so that argument falls down

it is also difficult to turn the other cheek (when beaten by a cheat) no matter how much self development you gain from it

so... automatic detection...let's see

and oh yes... MsCloyescapade far too personal in your comments... I think this is a good site and I don't think your being very fair in your remarks

I see these forums come & go. About cheating. I dont think I've ever encountered that. I just assume other players just win too. Do people really cheat? What would be signs to look for?

Baseballfan

The use of chess engines and other players is cheating. Not necessarily a computer. I have books on my computer, as well as databases which I use and it is not cheating. What is cheating is using a program that decides what move should be made or asking another player for their opinion. Books, articles, databases, etc. in any format are all legal. That said, there are many people on this site who feel that using ANY assistance is cheating, they are entitled to their opinion and may play by these rules if they wish, but using these things is not against the rules of this site.

You will get some type of response when you send in a report.

And also to ones selfconcions!

we should start a non cheating club - anyone who feels like they have been victimized by cheaters please let me know

let me clarify...I just don't think reference within a game is right.

it feels like cheating to me. so I would not do it.

I do use the analyisis board or even better my real chess board. but that's it for me I like to work things out for myself. sure use reference after or before a game. that is learning and progression.

but using a pre determined opening in a game (from a book) is just not in my volcabulary.

surely you can remember a few simple openings

I usually play the player (or perhaps the book it seems!)

oh yes ..computers and books are really the same thing (information)

additional

no wonder it takes some of you so long to move (initially) finding the right reply to e4 must take some finding in your reference books

don't look it up...it's e5

MsCloyescapade  please have a glass of wine and regroup. Erik and the team do a great job running the site and they cannot be responsible for the actions of every individual who takes actions that may not be in full agreement with your sensibilities. however, if you are in any way right about Erik's daily activities, i have to say that i could not be happier for anyone and i am even a little envious! cheers.

MsCloyescapade

Why am i geting called out? it was a joke, ha ha funny... no more.

I was just told by a player that the only reason I won was because I was cheating. It was in a private message but still very bothersome. It was verses a player I had beaten once, lost to four and draw once. The last game I worked my butt off to win. I've never taken so much time with a game. I researched every move I made. It is just as disappointing when someone thinks the only reason you can play a great game is by cheating.

Hugh_T_Patterson

Yes we should take a ratings hit for resigning after say three moves. I had an opponent that had to resign because he was sharing a computer and could not get the time he needed to play the game. He resigned after the first move. I don't think he should get a penalty, which he didn't.

Even if someone uses a book, but do not understand the moves, what will he/she do when the game progresses beyond the book? Copying others without understanding the underlying logic is totally useless.

If you suspect someone is using a book, and you are not, give some offbeat move (that will not immediately lose) - that will put him off the book.

YOU ARE ALL CORRECT. CHEATING IS VERY MUCH IN ALLKIND OF SPORT. WHO WILL BE BENIFITED THEN. THEM THE CHEATERS. FOR WHAT, FOR PRESTIGE TO BE WELL KNOWN IN CHES.COM. PATHETIC , YOU YOUR SELF KNOW YOUR ABILITY. LET THEM DO THEIR THINGS. THEY GOT WHAT THEY WANT OK BUT AT THE END THEY ARE ALL LOSER. THEY CHEAT THEIR SELF. GOOD DAY CHEATERS  HAVE FUN .

What is the impact to your rating if you opponent just stops playing and you resign? I hate to allow the clock to run out and get credited for a win because I feel that I didn't really win, but I also don't like the idea of resigning and having it appear as a loss. Not sure the best way to handle this?

qnl1051 - If his clock runs out, you gain rating points. If you resign, you lose rating points. Handle it as you like. I only faced this once and I took the rating points.
