Imagine a Chess MMORPG

I know I keep saying this, but I'm just trying to gain some support here. I believe this is the first step on a long road to this idea, but you have to take the first step if you ever intend to get there!

There is a difference in a thought and a dream. A thought comes with the intention of action; a dream is but an unfulfilled fantasy.

This sounds interesting. I would like the idea of trying to introduce elements similar to leveling up; in WoW and other games, it is probably too heavily depending on playing alot and accumilating experience and abilities. However, a few abilities thrown into the mix would make things more interesting and give more incentive than just rating to play.

For example, maybe the Sicilian Armor or a Sicilian spell could be used on move 2 to force the game, no matter what the opponent played, into the position after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3. It would be a nice way to force people out of book. It would also be instructive, as it means that you may have to play openings which are not part of your normal repitorie.

Or perhaps a magic spell or scroll or whatnot that would add an extra minute to your clock. The scroll could be a prize obtained after a quest.

I think this would leave the basic idea of the game and the integrity of chess intact, but add some interesting twists. The idea of a takeback also comes to mind, but that would have to be a very rare and powerful iteam.

If that happens, then the experienced players will have all of the specials. even if the benefits are small, it discourages new players.

You should include secret areas where you play chess variants in this too.

Seriously though, if anyone does have the skill this sounds like a unique and excellent idea.

As someone who has designed and produced games before though I would advise any initial release not to be too ambitious is all!

I actually wanna see this!

Well it's been nearly 2 years since this thread started...any progress other than a Facebook group?

I got around to making a Chess MMO (sans the RPG part) for Android that incorporates social play between many players.  However, unlike Rael's idea, players don't sit down to play a match/game.  Players are all playing on the same massive board simultaneously battling each other in a chaotic free for all.

Having upgrades and armor kinda degrades the simplicity of chess' game mechanics, so the game retains the same movement rules as traditional chess (except pawns can move in 4 directions and kings can create new pieces).  So, there's no adventures or quests.

Anyway, I was hoping the game would satisfy people's desire for a Chess MMO... which is what came across while reading this post.

The game is called King's Conflict and only runs on Android phones at the moment.  I'm tempted to make a desktop version if there was enough interest in it.  Let me know if you think I should make the effort to port it.

I supose the idea has died down know, yes?

I just read this, and it seems like an awesome idea to me!

- quests, puzzles, quizzes.. there is so much chessdata and "fun with chess"stuff that the content with regard to chess is available.

- a mode in which you can attack others. If you walk up to someone you can force him/her to play - and you play with white because you challenged.

But its going to be a humongous project. Will there be enough interest in this? Perhaps its easier to ask WoW to implement chess to their worlds instead of the other way around.

Has anyone suggested this to chess.com staff?

that idea sounds pretty cool actually but what about people who dont have a phone

So you have a bunch of players acting like they are a bunch of great masters and then you pit them against each other to play chess for survival and give them bonuses??

The problem here is chess isn't a physical sport.

The main feature of World of warcraft is PvP

but it souns cool.

Well, it could sound somewhat silly, sure. Lots of imagination experiments are silly. "If you were on a desert island and could only bring..." or "Let's use paper and pencils to create characters and role play them..." or "Let's pretend these wooden pieces are soldiers and fight them..."

Geez. Lots of things in life are silly. Play is silly. Just let yourself be imaginitive, manny.

I must say I agree with you there. There's nothing wrong with a bit of silliness!

You could crowdfund on Kickstarter or a similar website to create the game. Plenty of video games have been created that way.
