Old Thread: IMPORTANT Change Coming to Vacation Use!

Sort:
erik

we're making a change to vacation soon: all vacations will be a MINIMUM of 1 day. so, no more using "vacation" time to just manage an over-loaded games list.

vacation was meant for when you go on vacation and can't play your games for a few days, not as a way of extending lost positions or enabling people to play too many games.

so if you are the guy who uses auto-vacation to cover you for a few hours while you make too many moves, or make all of your moves in all of your other games but refuse to make a move in the game you are losing badly, you will quickly find yourself running out of time.

i know some people will disagree with this, but those people are probably the people mentioned in the previous paragraph.

Nice way of also making the datacenter work less hard.

i find a lot of my games being prolonged due to auto-vacation coming on. but i would rather timeout the games. im one from the 3rd paragraph i admit but not intentionally and thsi is a good improvement

How will this affect auto-vacation for paying members who are about to time out? Will it be eliminated? Will the vacation time be one day? I like this feature. It saved me from timing out in a game once. Absent minded sometimes.

Seems reasonable.  For those confused, I think the idea is that every time you turn on vacation, you're guaranteed to lose at least one day of stored vacation time.  No more taking it in three-hour increments to hold your clock while you're away from the computer.  So while that's probably small impact on people who take sporadic vacation, it's a meaningful loss for frequent vacationers.

Question: Will this prevent you from turning vacation off for a full day?  Or are you just losing minimum one day of vacation time?  I'm not sure I've ever let my auto-vacation turn on (maybe once), but it's nice to know it's a safety net if something comes up in real life.

Good point.

Also, am I correct in assuming that after the first minimum 24 hours are subtracted from vacation, it is still tracked as partial days beyond the first day?  For instance, if someone ends their vacation 6 hours into the second day, is their total deducted vacation time 30 hours rather than 48 hours (2 full days)?

i totally appreciate that chess.com is addressing the issue.    that being said, erik, do you think it's worth considering not allowing a player to post in forums or be active in their teams and groups while on "vacation"?  just an idea.

In addition to that, no Live Chess or any other site features.

i'm not sure i would take it that far plus since you've blocked me maybe don't try to build on my ideas you little twerp.

Bad idea.

Speaking for myself, the level of seriousness required for a turn-based game is much different than what is required for the forums. And for live chess.

Take an example. My family is coming into town for two weeks. I might want to not think about chess.com games for those two weeks. So I make moves in all my games, then put it on vacation. Maybe at the end of one evening, I have time to login to read some of the forums, or play a live chess game or two. It doesn't mean that I have the time to play the turn-based games.

What's the point of that?  I've taken one vacation period since I joined because I wanted a couple weeks of break from the games.  Why shouldn't people be able to continue with the other features?  Erik's change makes sense to avoid abuse of vacation, but there's no reason to look for ways to punish people who take legitimate breaks, regardless of whether they still have computer access.

I like this change... sounds good.
