According the Webmaster's Blog :

____________________________________________________

Will any features be removed?

Yes. One of the goals of this project is to make Chess.com a leaner, more elegant site, with less old (and mostly unused) code to maintain as we move forward. So, with much deliberation and careful attention to our web-traffic analytics, we made some cuts: Photos, Chessopedia, Endless Quiz, Downloads, “Local” club & event directories, and Shop Online.

I'm just curious.  Do any of these cuts bother anyone?

Club directories would be nice to keep.

Conflagration_Planet

Probably some will end up bothering me.

I can understand the photos perhaps, except what about blogs containing images linked directly to photo albums?

Endless Quiz seems pointless anyway, but do useful categories such a Chessopedia (which a lot of people devoted a lot of time to create), the local clubs and events directory and download section utilize THAT many resourses to justify simply eliminating them?  I can't see the benefit myself.

Conflagration_Planet

I agree.

I would like to see the downloads section stay. The rest of them I couldn't care less about.

One of the touted features are the enhanced-graphics game boards and pieces.  Do people find such things appealing or even practical??  I always look for the simplest, least graphical board and pieces with simple eye-pleasing colors.

The photo albums, to me, are difficult to assess.  Most photos have little to do with chess, and more to do with personal things - which isn't a bad thing but possibly a problematic thing since photo storage can take up a lot of space, I imagine. But I agree, photos are a calling card for many people.

CHCL

Keep the download section. I love that part of Chess.com.

Please keep it.

I heard  'note' will be going. I think this is stupid. Why not just get rid of the 'note' setting in your accountand the Note should only appear automatically between friends and not be seen by the community.

batgirl

None of these things are being kept.... that seems to be a fait accompli.

I was just curious if others were are disapponted as I.

batgirl

The blog says nothing about Notes. So who knows?

It's just thatseverything I see being added are things I don't personally want, need or care about (though everyone esle might) and many of the things being removed are things I do use or at least care about.

Less is more, brah.  They should get rid of profile photos as well.

kco

I don't mind the photos to go. If they want them, put them in your blog.

I have a similar reaction.  The club section is how many people find my local club.  If you use a search engine for chess in my area this is what comes up, so it would be nice if they kept that feature.

It seems like website designers need to shuffle things around every few years just to make it look like they’re improving.  I’m trying to work up a rant about it, but I don't care, I’ll just play else where.  The only question now is do I resign my games or let them time out?

There's 9 million people here. Some are going to be happy. Some are going to be pissed.

Local clubs? I'd go to uschess.org to find a much more comprehensive listing. I have to imaging that most countries have a governing body that also provides such lists.

One day the forums will be the site's main feature.  The process has already begun, in "Off Topic."

In two years, there will be bustling forums here for Art, Philosophy, Wine, Food, Music, Film, Architecture, Automobiles, Books, Fashion, Science, Anime, Manga, Comic Books, Sports, and many other topics.  Chess will just be one of the many (and most likely one of the lesser active boards).

Maybe so.  A good reason to vacate as sleepingcatinthesun (did I get that right?) implies.

Yes, it is great to have options so that each person can find what they consider to be the most eye-pleasing combination.  Based on what I've seen other people use, my taste is decidedly different than some others' tastes.

More options is always better in this department.  I am quite picky about what I use to play chess.  In fact, none of the options for free users here are remotely pleasing.  As a result, I play much worse here than other servers.
