Hi there! I just downloaded the app and am looking to be a better chess player (for various reasons). I played a bit in high high school, and also sometimes play chess with clients (I'm a therapist). Anyways I was wondering if you could answer some questions for me.
- One of the biggest reasons I've decided to make chess a part of my daily routine is I've read about how chess positively affects the brain. Has anyone here noticed positive mental or emotional benefits from playing chess?
Yes, studying and playing chess with good results feels good.
- I'm definitely nowhere near as good as I would like to be getting back into playing chess on a regular basis. Something that's made it a bit harder is I've met a person or two who seemed to have quite the ego and let me know how inferior I was to them. How common is this when you play with others regularly?
Yes, there are those types. They tend to be clustered around the beginner ratings. If you improve, you will see most of them disappear.
- Finally, I would love to hear any personal insights about what helped you improve your game. I'm excited to hear back from people and get some good ideas!
Buying a membership and getting access to videos and more tactics training and lessons is very worthwhile. Reading and studying chess books is also very helpful. Paid lessons can help you progress because the feedback is invaluable.
