I think the fact it says their pieces is kinda saying you can't move your opponents

In which case it's at least ambiguous. I take "their" as a plural possessive pronoun and (feminist lobby permitting) "his" as the singular. So "their pieces" in the article would mean only the pieces belonging to the players (plural).

Had FIFE intended to restrict each player's moves to his own pieces they would presumably have worded it, "The game of chess is played between two opponents each of whom moves his pieces on a square board called a ‘chessboard’.

Did you just assume the genders of the players?

No. When I was at grammar school the masculine form was taken to embrace the feminine.

I was joking to be fair. But also English grammar differs from French and German etc.

The traitor: it moves and captures like a queen but every time you decide to move it, you must announce that intention, roll one die, and if the result is an odd number, it becomes your opponent's piece before you can move it.

A piece that can only capture his own friendly pieces and moves like a king

The Dirk Jan. Very useless but nonetheless you will love it!

The Maurice. Its a super mini robotic computer that returns you moved piece every time you don't make a 40 depth analysis move.

An invisible pawn on a2. It moves exactly the same way as the regular pawn on a2 moves, and at the same time.

In fact, it's completely redundant, making it the most useless piece imaginable.

EndgameEnthusiast2357

No really redundant, as a piece capturing on a2 only removes 1 of the pawns

EndgameEnthusiast2357

A piece that moves like the queen and knight, but doesn't capture, only checks and checkmates. It co-occupies any occupied square.
