Is 10+0 players pool stronger than the 15+10 pool or the 30+0 pool?

I can’t really speak for Rapid, but I am stronger in 10+0 than I am in 15+10, but I think part of that is because I am just a more blitz-orientated player so do better with less time (or perhaps my opponents are just even worse with less time 🤣).

That being said, I do believe there is a difference of skill level between 3+0 and 5+0 within the blitz pools. 5+0 feels easier than 3+0. Others have said something similar. It’d be cool to have data on ‘performance ratings’ between different time controls within the same category.

When I started out I played 10+0 (which was blitz back then) and 30+0. 30+0 was a lot easier at those early ranks but far too many people was running out the clock to make it fun to play that time control. It was also rare that i ran out of time playing 10+0 so it made no sense to play longer time controls.

Around 1500 rating i had to switch from 10+0 to 15+10 because i lost way too many winning positions due to time problems. What I immediately noticed was that the tricks and traps I could use to win at 10+0 simply didn't work at 15+10, people had enough time to figure out a solution if my play was flawed. Wins on time were from winning or tricky equal positions, losses on time was due to thinking too much from bad positions.

it might have changed now, i just came back to this site after a 2.5 year hiatus where i focused on other stuff.

@chozo_scion are you a Kan Sicilian and Catalan player?

Actually I looked at some of your games and noticed that we do have similar repertoires haha. I don't play Kan, though, I play Taimanov which is VERY similar as I'm sure you know except I tend to have 5.Qc7 on the board and often delay a6. Also, one of your students reached out to me and apparently we are almost the same age too.
I do play Catalan as well and I LOVE that opening.

Thats awesome to hear!

I hope you can help that person out.

My time is limited nowadays now that I fell in love with a special someone.

Congrats! Happy for you, man.
Ever since my breakup I've had so much more time for chess but I'll be looking again soon haha

Thank-you!

I’ll be honest, my board vision sucks and patience is stunted for chess at the moment but if it weren’t for two+ dozen training partners, I wouldn’t be engage in online chess.

♟️call them training partners or friends now because they have surpassed me or moved onto 2000+

I bring value to others ways such as applying proven training methods and techniques at the club level, life management and skills.

Chess knowledge is old and readily available anyways….

That's pretty cool!
For me online chess was how I started back in 2017 and things really escalated once I joined an online community which helped put me in touch with all kinds of ideas and resources. I've meant to compete OTB since last year but I had a lot of goals I wanted to reach first establishing my new opening repertoire and getting certain rating milestones. The goal for 2023 was to get 1900 and I DID get 1895....twice...haha but I play a very large volume of games to help me continually go back into my repertoire courses and pinpoint which variations to work on and because of that I tilt too. One day I did 86 10+0 games in a single day. It's a little much but I think that has helped me have stamina for long OTB events too.
I did play my first two events in the past two months and I have my third on Sunday. I'm finding OTB to be extremely fun. Where you say board vision is an issue, for me, it was acclimating to board vision in person OTB as opposed to that isometric view you get online and so far it's come along nicely. Looking forward to compete some more!

Go for your goals! You’ll regret it if you don’t.

I will say chess is becoming or if not already, a young man’s (and woman’s) game.

I mean, I am 41 so I hope it's not a young man's game only LOL.
Thanks, though. My main goal is to have fun and chess is inherently just that. I want to improve my strength and perhaps rating will follow and mostly I want to be the co-author of cool games. That's what I'm all about in this game

The best advice I can share is to focus on self improvement.

When you do, improvement follows performance and performance follows rating points.

The majority have it wrong and backwards in that they solely focus on ratings points and never improve.

Here's a question to answer the OP's question: Is the 1/0 playerbase stronger than the 10 min playerbase?

Bad analogy. You could ( and I do) succeed in 10+0 with the exact same skillset, plans and repertoire as 15+10. It just requires slightly better board vision and calculation speed.

In 1+0 something like 70% of the games end by flagging and only roughly half of the time was the winner in a better position. That format is pure time pressure scrambling. Nothing against bullet, but it is almost a different game entirely whereas 10+0 and 15+10 are very similar.
It's not about the differences between 10+0 and 15+10, anyways, but the differences in the size of the player pool.

So with that in mind, let me ask you a question:
If two high schools compete in track and field and one has 1000 students while the other has 20,000, which school is likely to have the better athletes and why?
So not only is the 10+0 pool much larger, there is also the issue of it being much more active which means on average, Glicko RD is going to be lower and you are less likely to run into players with inflated ratings.

So I am not saying 15+10 is "easier" by default, but more because of usage stats in the player pools of this website. Personally, I'm stronger in 15+10, but I focus purely on 10+0 because I don't want my rating to be inflated.
