Is it time to give up the French defense

I have been playing the French defense for the past year or so. I like it. However, it does not like me. I seem to get passive positions and and

in the midst of a long losing streak. However, if I give it up and try to learn the Sicialian, I have to go through the pains of losing more to learn the opening.

My question is, does one hang in there or cut one's losses And switch.

What have others done.

You have played 0 games here in 5 1/2 years.  How is anyone supposed to know, and or help you decide on what opening to play?

Because people on icc are too chess addicts.

Here in chess.com the foruns are better because people here does not waste too much time playing chess, chatting is funnier.

I agree with GodsPawn2016 as we know nothing of your capabilities.

however that said, one should always look to expand our knowledge of different positions in openings, middle and endgames.    So if you are not feeling comfortable with French type positions, you have to experiment with Caro Kann, double K pawn openings, etc.    If you lack motivation, then stop playing for awhile, until you feel hungry to play again.

It all depends if you want to improve.   you should always try to broaden your opening reportoire.   It will make you not only a more rounded player in the openings, but helps your thinking in the middle and endgames.

Exactly my point.  Not picking on the guy.  But with no games played, no games submitted for review, no idea of his ability, and nothing to go on.  How is anyone supposed to suggest what he should play?

Do you really need suggestions from strangers?

I will be a French captive for 4 years soon!

Just to give you a background. My peak USCF rating was 1950.For whatever reason, I won more against 2,000's that 1900's. I used to use the Tarrasch vs d4 and the open Ruy and Classical Berlinn vs e4. I had decent results. Sometimes I got crushed. However, with the active pieces that resulted, I was able to pull off some ice upsets. I am 61 years old and Nigel Davies said the French defense was good for an older player since he said tactical/analytical ability decline with age. I am sure better players that me can figure out the French defense. However, I find with the French that I feel cramped and under developed. I do not think that Godspawn meant anything disrespectful. At least I am not taking it that way. I just wanted to know if other players have had the same opening struggles that I have. I feel I have put in a lot of time and energy into the French.I am inclined to cut my losses on it though. I play my competitive games on the icc. However, I like the leaning articles and the forums on chess.com much better.

Sometimes positions don't suit your preferred style of play, as in an opening doesn't jive with your normal chess senses; counter intuitive. Maybe the French defense is like that for you. Experiment a bit, see if another defense gives you positions that seem natural to you, the ideas make sense, you find the moves are more intuitive to you. I wouldn't play an opening just because it's suppose to be better for my age, especially if it's not giving me good results from it.

I keep coming back to the French.Although I think it important to gain experience of other pawn structures that other openings provide.

I'm returning to 1e4 after a few years away. I find ...e6 the toughest to play against, because I never know what to play. the sidelines don't seem to give much but the mainlines can be better known by the French player who specialises:

1e4 e6

2d4 d5

if 3Nc3 - the most principled - white has to know several systems

3Nd2 is a little anaemic

3e5 black can choose several good lines.

3ed A weaker player as white will routinely get beat if they play for a draw with this

If you get passive positions, you're a passive player. If you start looking at the French as a counterattack on white's center instead of a "defense", you'll start to see improvements. Otherwise you'll take up the Sicilian and lament how passive that is.
