Welcome to the World Wide Web.
Is There No Hope?

I have met a number of very cool people online. Friends for life. However, in general the web is populated with a group I can't name on here or I'd get booted. :) It's a term very fitting. A four letter word starting with f... followed by "wits" And the "wits" are everywhere man. I weep for the future...

Manners are deteriorating everywhere....I have noticed it on this site too.
I know that, and it's getting worse.

I've met some great people here too. Some that live quite close. And I agree with the name thing.

I hear what your saying, I've met some of my best friends because of chess.com and also some of the worst people to ever walk the face of this planet. However it's part of being on the internet I'm afraid, just don't let it get to you and you'll be okay.

Manners are a social lubricant; like oil is to an engine. The larger our population grows, the more people are thrown together, the more we need manners.
The deterioration of manners has lead to a marked increase in laws. New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the Union. When In high school, in North Jersey, I had a car when I was a senior. I had a girl, too. What I didn't have was a good spot where I could take the car and the girl to get some... privacy.
I didn't notice how restricted New Jersey really was until I began visiting a friend in Oregon. The rule in Oregon is, basically, if you can get there you can go there. In New Jersey, you are never allowed near a waterfall, or a scenic overlook without being hindered by laws and restrictions. Almost all parks and nature trails in North Jersey close at dusk. You can't even pack up and go camping without a permit.
I believe that the difference is due to Oregon's sparse population. If people have room to spread out, they are generally better mannered and less governed.
Just MHO

Lou

yes, there is hope. some people are pleasant and polite here on chess.com.
I don't know what time control you play, but playing G30 I rarely get any negative chat or other annoying behavior.
I don't know, exactly, what can be done about it. although, I will say this; if someone says something nasty on chat during a game they should be reported. perhaps chess.com will warn them. I imagine if a person is reported enough, exceptionally rude people can be booted from the site.
best of luck. don't let impolite people get to you.

I'm starting to see that there is a growing number of jerks/trolls on chess.com. Such as yesterday, I beat a member and he/she said for me to go, "suck a ****". I want to know if I'm the only one experiencing this.
Unfortunately, you have to deal with trolls. Trolls and jerks exist everywhere, especially on the Internet. Even worse, there's nothing that can be done about this. I'm sure you're not the only one experiencing this.

Under my settings I have "Auto-disable Chat", this excludes friends.
I'll have to look into that.

Okay, I try, but I'm running out of room on my block list.

I play most the time controls on this site. I report and block people, though that's starting to get old.

I'm sure I'm not. Just wondering if this is as big a problem as I think it is.
