How do you know he lying, and why did mastermater1 get the boot?
I didn't know that masturmater1 got booted, are you sure? I also don't know that 5oswords got booted, as far as I can tell he just skulked away.

By the way, the guy sure is taking a lot of heat considering all he did was talk a
little trash. I don't think he's a 2300(maybe a 1700) but just about everyone here
talks trash(including myself) in the forums.
He always talked chess and spent a lot of time analyzing games and yet I see
people nominated for "Chess Player Of The Month" that never contribute to the
forums in a positive way.
There are far worse statements made on Chess.com. than anything this guy
has said to get angry over that's for sure.
This was my point in that thread. Basically he'd claimed to have a performance rating of around 2300. It was obvious to anyone who was a B or C player that he was about B or C strength. So, someone looked up his profile, found his name there and googled him. Found that he'd just played in a tourney (in North Caroline, I think) in the under 1700 or 1800 section and that he hadn't done very well. So, that person reported all of this to in a post. 5oSwords got really weird at that point, getting called out for lying. I, among others, said that he should just come clean and that all would be forgiven, instead he just stopped posting. I don't know what his status is. I tell him that if he wanted to pretent to be almost IM strength he probably should not put his name in his profile :)

He had a blog on here just yestarday where he was saying chess was going to be solved in fifty years. But most of the blog was spent begging eric not to delete his account. He said he just wanted to use the forums, and he wouldn't play chess. I asked why he said he wouldn't play chess, and tracked the blog. When I tried to click on it today, it had been deleted. I'm sure I remember seeing his name in the cheaters galory a while back. Must be why he promised not to play chess.

It was cheater_1, no joke. I recognised the sentence construction, the emphasis and the partial capitalization. I called him on it, in his first blog entry. The blog entry you refer to was his second, after he realised that he wouldn't be able to hide his former identity.
I don't think that a person should have to have a high rating to give chess
advice.
In fact, IM Silman himself said even a 1400 could give chess lessons in one of
his articles. There are plenty of 2000+ players who can't explain chess at all.

If by cheaters gallery you mean erik's list of confirmed cheaters, he's not on it.
Jeez, I thought five of swords was very passionate about chess and gave really solid advice... so I think it's too bad he got run off... I thought it was undeserved. He posted _a lot_, and although he wasn't obnoxiously arrogant IMO you could tell he thought highly of himself, and I admit I really wanted to catch him in an error just to take him down a peg...but if he made any blunders I never saw them. He said one foolish thing, I wouldn't call it a lie at all I'd call it vanity. He said something like he thought he was 2300 strength... Jeez if everyone who overestimates their strength deserves punishment I think pretty much all chess players deserve a beatdown at one point or another... we're an oddly egotistical bunch IMO. Surprised to hear 5ofswords rubbed so many people the wrong way. He seemed decent to me.
I saw a couple of inacuracies in his analyses. One time he was called on it, another time he wasn't. He did have quite an inflated opinion of himself, but for the most part he seemed harmless.
Depends what kind of chess advice. A 1400 claiming stuff like, "Don't play the Petroff Defense because it has been refuted" is a joke. It's all relative, a 1400, especially one that has good teaching skills, can easily explain things to say, a 1000 player and get them to improve their play. But a 1400 telling NMs that their evaluation of a given position is wrong is just a waste of everyone's time.
It was obvious that Fiveofswords had the ability of a B class player. He would make so many overgeneralizations regarding many things about chess. His neverending quest to prove that the Sicilian Alapin was the best thing since sliced bread ranged from boring to moronic.
I never got that much of an impression that masturmater_1 was cheater_1 in disguise. Care to elaborate more on this finding? It wouldn't surprise me if cheater_1 was still floating around here somewhere.
ouachita was weird. It kind of makes me jaded about 2500+ play on Chess.com. I mean, the titled players spotted that he was full of BS a mile away (claiming like he was 2600 FIDE or something). I mean, how much time on the analysis board, how deep of an opening and game database, and how many books do you have to read so that patzers can manage to play like Super GMs on the internet? Is it even possible?
It's been a while, but I'm sure I saw a name that ended with mater in the cheaters list. Not sure if it was mastermater though.
I didn't know anything about masterbater1, I thought he was just annoying and potentially just a drama queen/troll. I didn't know that he was booted, but I can't really say I'm not surprised; i too read his blog and quoted it to him and he just ignored me from then on.
5ofBores, on the other hand, was arrogant and there's plenty of that to go around. Unfortunatly he was also a liar, and a bad one at that. I just don't really understand why it seems to be the norm around here that when sombody rightly/correctly calls "bullshit" on somebody else there seems to be the almost universal reflexive use of denial. If people would just admit it when they've been wrong about something life would be so much simpler.
5ofswords is still here. He just hasn't logged in for a couple weeks.
Well, that's the same as not being here, in my view. I never said or thought he'd been booted. If he'd just "man up" and admit that he'd lied I'm sure all would be forgiven...
Reb is chess.com's resident defender of truth and justice.
You're joking right?
On Reb's computer is a database from Convekta containing all three of my games vs GM Reshevsky.
Despite this, Reb claims in various forum posts I have never played Reshevsky.
Reb's posts can be entertaining and occasionally informative but...truthful? That's a stretch.
Hey geek, I do NOT recall ever claiming that you never played Reshevsky, care to provide the forum and post # ? In fact I believe you probably did play him in postal or in a simul.... I doubt you ever played him in an otb classic game one on one however......
Please provide the forum(s) and post # in which I made such a claim ? I am waiting....
I AM STILL WAITING ...
He might be immune-- generally the bigger the font people use against me, the more fun I find it to ignore.
Well, I will give him a few days to provide the " various forum posts " he claims I made in which I said he never played Reshevsky and if he doesnt then all will know he's simply telling a bald faced lie......

As has already been stated in this thread, he wasn't "chased off" for lying about his playing strength, but rather his response to Reb calling him on it. He insulted him and then basically slapped him with a gauntlet. When Reb accepted the challenge, Five disappeared. That's why he's been gone.
Which thread is this?
Can someone please tell me the story in a nutshell?
