Kicked off the server....

Hello Chess.com community!

Today I was involved in two great live games.  In the middle of both I got kicked off the server.  I find this to be very irritating.  When I am more than ten moves into a game my being becomes the general of that army upon the board.

What is the point of having live chess if players can't complete their games?

My apologies to the other players if it seemed I abandoned mid-game.

David.

Hi!

Sorry about that, but the server sometimes disconnects people.  Just wait until August, when live chess gets a new server.  Hopefully, that will eliminate the vast majority of disconnects.

PLEASE READ! DO NOT USE LIVE CHESS unless you understand that it is still a work-in-progress. You MAY be disconnected randomly. You MAY experience lag. You WILL be disappointed if you expect anything else. For the BEST EXPERIENCE on Live Chess we recommend that you use Firefox 3, Safari 3, or Chrome. Internet Explorer browser does not perform well in Live Chess. Seriously, try Firefox 3!

We are working really hard on making Live Chess as fast, stable, and amazing as possible. In the mean time, please be patient - thanks!

Also, connecting your computer with a lan cable should help lessen the disconnects.

The usual problem with losing your connection is an old modem or an old computer. If either of these is over five or six (perhaps even seven) years old, this is probably the problem. They will wear out, but they do not outright die, and therefore give the impression that a server is the problem (because you get a message that connection to the server is lost). The main culprit is an old computer.

There is no truth in this at all. It is a server problem nothing else.

Note to everyone else: I lost connection with this chess site on a regular basis, and when I got a new computer and modem I never had another problem. It very simply worked for me. So, if you know a friend or some other place with a much newer computer and modem setup than yours, use your sign-on from that different overall setup location and see for yourself what happens. Just try it and judge for yourself.

Wow, holy thread resurrection

But, many disconnects are directly attributable to client side issues or something on the path to the server. I won't try to claim that the client code couldn't be more robust (better keep-alive code, move acknowledgment code, etc) but often, other processes on the client computer and network can cause connection issues.Things like streaming music (in another tab or on another system), a lot of tabs or other processes on the system or network that are using resources, etc, etc.

If I had to guess, I would think client code and server issues are the cause of less than 20% of disconnects and the rest are outside the site's control. I know when I'm trying to play blitz on my wireless (which isn't the best) and other computers on my network on playing online games or streaming video, I get a lot of lag and some disconnects. Even when wired I get slowdowns in such cases.

I saw a link today on LinkedIn that states the site has recently implemented, or at least purchased, some technology to improve the Live server backend,  so maybe that will improve things some.
