Live app has slow response under 20 seconds

Has anyone else noticed that the Live Chess (browser-based) web app becomes very slow once the 20 second timer hits?

For me, it's extremely reproducable. The moment the 20 mark arrives the UI starts to lag, so that there are only refreshes about every half second. This means there is a minimum 1 second turn-time, but usually more is spent waiting for visual confirmation of mouse location. If I'm using click-to-play (rather than drag) this also means it frequently misses clicks.

I assume it's bad code refreshing the clock in the applet, meant to display more accurate time when the end is near. After the timer runs out, this slow performance continues for some time after the game is over. Under the covers, we'd probably see the clock's fast-refresh mode still active after the game has completed.

It's so annoying that it's kinda funny. The "low time rattle" indicates not only that you'd better hurry, but that the game will enforce veeeeerrrrry sloooooow movements.

On blitz games this is a large percentage of the clock time.
