Winners always rewrite history and all armies have done wrong things. Remember who sunk the Belgrano?

I agree with the first part of your message, but I must confess my ignorance of the second.  Would you care to enlighten us regarding the Belgrano, because I have never heard of it.

Crazychessplaya

Fess up, Ciljettu, did you sink the Belgrano?

Vance917

German pride is not at all the same as Nazi pride.  You are correct that others have also been responsible for unspeakable atrocities, but in no way does that mitigate responsibility for ones actions.  "Everybody else was doing it too" is no better than "I was just following orders".  That defense did not work in Nuremberg, did it?

Vance917

I take your point.  But even if we agree that the Nazis were no worse than any other army, we must still concern ourselves with perception, as well as with reality.  There is no question that the perception is that the Nazis were worse (my guess is that this is probably the reality too, but that is not required for my argument to be valid).  The perception is so eggregious that the only possible motivation to use a swastika as a profile photo is to incite hatred.  As an analogy, you may call me stupid in an effort to offend me.  I know for a fact that I am not stupid, so that would be a pretty ineffective insult.  And yet I still recognize your effort to insult me, and I may still be offended by that, even if the insult itself was off the mark.

One should distinguish between the Wehrmacht and the Waffen-SS.

You guys get off topic real fast don't you?

I agree that the reason for putting a swastika is probably because someone is being a bit of an a-hole, but being a devil's advocate is my favourite passtime, so there you go.

I guess this person could argue that he was putting a swastika for military nostalgia reasons and it is up to you to prove that he is "in mala fide"

There are different types of proof for different situations.  This proof will not be deductive; there will be no QED at the end.  That said, the only type of proof possible is a preponderance of evidence, and I would argue that this type of proof is in the pudding, so to speak.

Vance917

It doesn't prove it, and yet we still all know it, don't we?  So we have a de facto proof.

His avatar is presently just the standard Chess.com "pawn icon."

He's from "Iran, Iran."  Twice for effect?

If they name a ship after him, someone can sink that too.  Laughing

Absolutely.  Goes with the territory.  Misdirection wins almost everytime.

interesting fact on the battleship/cruiser Belgrano, it was built in 1935-38 , it was an American ship named USS Phoenix and survived undamaged in the attack of pearl harbour, it was classed in the American navy as a very lucky ship saw extensive action in the Pacific earning 9 battlestars , it was sold to Argentina in 1951.

maybe he was trying to bring people's attention to the fact that the united states and the world in general seem to be undergoing what scholar Naomi Wolf has termed a "fascist shift". similar to what occurred in germany in the 1930s. you all think the nazi's were horrible right? if you only knew the full extent of what other governments, including the U.S., U.K. have done (continue to do).....all you have to do is research and you'll quickly find that reality is a real freaking mess.
