I've always found the implementation of the new tracked content alerts a little clumsy.

I tend to agree. Of course, if it's just the Alerts part that gets you, they can be disabled without any effect on the other info shown on your home page. I'd guess the days are numbered for the "big yellow box," although nothing concrete yet in terms of plans to phase out or replace it.

Personally I prefer the "counter" approach, a la Facebook, Springpad or Google+

I like getting the alerts, I don't like how they work -- in particular, the interaction between the alerts and the new content table (stuff dissapears from the latter without clearing from the former, for example).

I like the "counter" approach as well, as long as it interacts properly with the new content table.

  • #1363

Sure, but what would characterize proper interaction?

Right now, any percieved interaction between the Alerts display and the contents of the "New Comments" or "My Tracked Activity" tables is technically coincidental.

The Alerts are sometimes a little slow (one page reload) recognizing that you *have* seen a particular piece of content - is it as simple as addressing that?

  • #1364

It may be, and in some cases I'm certain that it is.  Sometimes, though, I'm pretty sure I've read the content, and it's dissapeared from the table, but the alert persists

  • #1365

Yes, that's very possible, I think. Ok, good notes. :)

How long can someone be on three months' holiday before it says something different?

  • #1367

    That's a leading question -- three months?

Yup, just looked again. It says three months, and has done for about 4 or 5 days.

They round off to months and weeks until it gets close to running out. Like "2 months 3 weeks".

I think this is the match you are talking about:

    OlafWillnecker is currently on vacation!
They have 2 Months 25 Days of vacation time left, but may be back sooner.

so he can be out til so time September

I don't mind how long he's away for - but when you look why do you see 2 months and 25 days, while I see 3 months?

  • #1375

    this is what I see

  • #1376

If I was that clever, I'd reproduce what I see. It's the same, but with 3 months at the foot.

I have seen the same type of thing too.

This isn't that big a deal. But you'd have thought it would be quite important for a chess site to ensure everyone saw the same thing...

  • #1379

I have always liked the '' yellow-panel '' & alerts-feature. It's the first-place I go to & work through when logging-on. It's never been perfect at delivering notifications timeously but latterly has become much worse, sometimes vanishing completely even though had only checked 1 or 2 of the alerts listed.

Not a MAJOR problem but it is annoying...

While we're throwing out feature requests, I'd love the ability to apply search terms to a single thread and to be directed to the page(s) within the thread that have hits.
