Hi all. I originally learned some chess moves in grade school from my stepfather. Okay, I'm now old enough to be a grandmother.

I'm looking for suggestions on what to learn first to start playing chess. I have trouble "seeing" moves beyond my move. I guess you could say anticipating my opponents move.

Thanks!

start playing DD :) . you will begin to  feel the moves  and it is a lot easier than just learning theory by heart.  I hope you will feel comfortable here, it is a great site, a wonderful community and you can make really good friends here.

Hi DD,

I'm in a similar position, where I used to play a lot in my early teens but gave it up for years and years. Emiab is correct, and you should just play. Look for people with ratings between 500 - 800 on this site and challenge them. Don't worry about missing moves just yet, just get familiar with the basics again.

Also, if you're interested in reading up on the subject, go to the Library and see if they've got any chess books there to take out. Look for Seirawan's and Silman's books as they're very good for beginners.

One final point, use the Tactics Trainer on this site, as a non paying member you get 3 free problems per day. After a few frustrating days I suddenly started to make headway and now I'm pretty comfortable with it.

Finally, welcome to Chess.com

Hi DD,

Im' fairly new to this site, and like you I started quite young moving pieces on a chess board and I thought I knew how to play...wrong. So now I'm really learning. Having a passion for the game helps too. One thing's for sure, you came to the right site, I can't speak highly enough of it. Don't be afraid to get your feet wet and explore the site there's alot here to help you, including some swell people. Welcome to Chess.com and lots of luck to you.
