No friends
I don't think your profile picture was the problem. Some have the default chess.com pawn as the avatar, and they have MANY friends. Although 1of 20 requests does seem unusual to me. Maybe it says more about the people you sent the requests to than it says about you.
If you like your profile picture - keep it; I would not change it just to get friends. I am not really sure why 19 of 20 did not accept. I seldom send friend requests, but I don't recall ever being turned down - I mean who does that? If someone sends one to me, I would need a reason not to accept, not the other way around.
I forgot that you get paired by another opponent around the world, so maybe all the people I sent a request did not know English. Why have a friend, if you can't communicate with them.
Not being able to speak in English is a possibility. However over 50% of everything online is in English - and the majority of movies are also in English (due to Hollywood being a powerhouse of the entertainment industry). They may not speak/understand English, but statistically they probably do. (All of these stats kind of makes you proud that you speak English right?
) These statistics are some of the reasons that learning English as a second language is so popular - I have been blessed to have learned English first ![]()
In short, they may not understand English - but saying they do is the safe bet, as long as you realize the possibility of them not understanding.
Thank you, for your insight. I'm sure that within more time of playing. I'm sure to have more accepted friends.

Wild guess that you like anime. Here are the top 2 groups/clubs on the subject. That's a handy search feature. Go get 'em.

lmfao, I'm sure they do have lots of friends.
Ya
Change our your avatar to a geeky girl,,,then pretend to be vulnerable and approachable during game chat...you will need a stick to fight off friend requests.
Not sure what is common. I friend anyone I see with a bird picture (check my friends list, you get the theme) with about 75% acceptance rate. My logic is...if someone likes chess AND birds...they'd probably get along fine with me. Find some interest you have (other than chess) and try to friend people who are into that.
I like your latest post here Username333 (post #15). Just look at that dinosaur face - it looks more confused regarding where the friends are versus being lonely. In a comical way, I kind of feel bad for the "little guy."
P.S. despite inaccurate depictions of dinosaurs (like in the movie Jurassic Park for example), the average size of a fully grown dinosaur was about the size of a sheep. Sure, tall herbivores (like in the picture) existed alongside giants like the iconic T-Rex - but there were MANY really small types of dinosaurs that skews the average.
