Peace dove as flair

This is a chess site, not a political site.

Cortiz94

This is not about politics, this is about humanity. It is much further.

We must support the Ukrainian people.

Ramon

Morals are easy to maintain in peace time, when all is well and the worst concern is whether you still have enough beer in the fridge.

People feel threatened now, feel the need to talk, express and feel solidarity.
In this time everything is politics

In general, yes ... But chess.com itself adressed this issue ...

(And the OP did not even go so for to demand or state "support of Ukraine", just to ask for a peace symbol ... And I would assume there is a common sensus on this site, beyond politics, that we prefer peace to war ...)

Peace symbol added to chess.com flair is a wonderful idea.

Hi Ammerbucher, I totally support your call for the dove symbol. I view the dove as universal untainted by any course of political debate. May God keep you and your fellow countrymen, women and children safe.

A peace symbol is nice, but is this all you can do? Russia have invaded Ukraine and Putin is threatening the rest of us with nuclear war. Chess is part of Putin's propaganda. A ban on Russian players will have an effect. All good Russians will understand and support this ban.

Hanseat_unplugged

I would not agree. It were not the Russian chess players who attacked Ukraine.

You miss the point. Putin is using chess and all kinds of sport as propaganda: https://www.rt.com/sport/409719-karjakin-joins-team-putin/

🕊 Let's play chess together, together with our Russian and Ukrainian friends and chess friends worldwide. We don't want to divide, we want to stand together for a peaceful world. 🕊

Ah, if only life and things were so simple.

Unfortunately it isn't. You are right. But we can live it this way here in our chess community.

Please remember that it is against our terms of service to have political discussions. There are plenty of sites on the web to have these discussions. Please remember that this is a chess site and not the place for these discussions.

This thread remains open for now, as long as it gets back to the original topic, but if political conversations continue we will lock it down. Please be civil and supportive of everyone during this difficult time.

Chess.com's stance on current situation in Ukraine: https://www.chess.com/blog/CHESScom/in-support-of-ukraine

Ammerbucher

Please just refer to the OP. I understand of course that a lot of members would like to do more or something else (at least discuss the issue). But I suggest indeed to do that somewhere else, and not to risk to have this forum locked.

This forum is only about the peace dove as flair.

For whoever might want to use it, for whatever reasons ...

boddythepoddy

For whatever reason? Pffff

Then please make a place, maybe a new forum where this matter can be discussed.

At the moment chess.com appears to be conducting a purge of almost all topics where this matter is even mentioned.

The only exception is what might be called "State sanctioned ones", that is ones started and rigidly controlled by chess.com itself.

This is a matter of the utmost importance, to probably all of us, we do not live in a vacuum, neither should chess.com, certainly not on this matter.

It seems to be that " no political discussions" is simply becoming a mantra for what in essence is an attempt to shut people down, and is getting very close to censorship.

I think that is from the book of Luke. To whom much is given, much is required.

As it's become glaringly obvious by now, this topic reaches far beyond politics. Politics can no longer be used as an excuse or crutch from which to pretend one is above the fray and somehow "required" to not allow discussion. Censorship benefits one side, and one side only. And we all know which side that is.

Chess.com, because of what it has been given, (the international audience) is required to allow beneficial discussion of this matter.

There are those that say, and those that do. A so called statement of support are pointless empty words. Actions carry so much more weight. The action of shutting down beneficial discussion is what one is remembered by. All we have to do is watch the news and we see in real time where this discussion is encouraged, and where it's shut down.

Done! Great idea.

Also funny that we all support peace, but play a game that is basically ritualised warfare. happy.png

maybe it is a vision of the future, where leaders simply play a game of chess and the winner wins.

ah, utopia what a fine place
