one day i will play 2 or 3 30 min games and the next i will methodically go over each move in each game; takes a few hours and i am exhausted after but it really pays off
usually the 3rd day i will do some positional analysis from books (chess antennae; mayhem in the morra; soviet chess primer *thx pfren for recommendation)
everyday i will work on tactics trainer (usually several times throughout the day- and the more focused i am the better)
i also do work on chessable (train some e4 opening ideas and some tactics exercises)
Howdy,
I have read a lot of forums were players tried to find the best way to improve themselves. All kind of techniques aroused. Some of them didn't apply to everybody, or were too fast and, based on what people say, they searched for the best way to improve themselves on a decent pace, good enough to "keep in check" their addiction to chess, or to avoid burnouts. In my case, I found the perfect formula which suits me and I want to share with you guys and gals, the wonderful community of chess, here at chess.com in idea that my formula will help you too.
So, here we go:
I tried different ways to improve at chess, here on the site and after a few years as active member, I settle for a specific formula and here it is!
1. I discovered that if I go for unlimited tactics is too overwhelming, besides having the need to use our limited daily time for other things. So, I do 25 tactics a day, after I woke up.
2. I tried different ways to play blitz, bullet and so on and I got to the point where 10 minutes blitz is fairly decent to think over, well enough to be satisfied with the outcome. If I have time, I play a few games, after tactics and looking to apply what I learn on tactics during the game.
3. After every game I go back and start the game all over again by myself and look how I played. Usually, if you use the same opening like me, you will see right away where you made your mistakes. Many players play game after game without going back to the game just finished and that's why they are not advancing. After each game you should learn something out of it.
Good luck and share your experiences, if you would like! Thank you!
