Petition to Make Chess A Sport

Well you aren't making much sense. You said sports do not require physical skill. And now you say baseball is a sport. And that it DOES require physical skill. So how can it both not require it, and require it, at the same time?

And if those games you listed are sports, why are they not in the world sports encyclopedia? The exhaustive list of all 3,000 sports?

Physical skill is not a requirement of a sport. Only some sort of skill is required. The bare minimum for a sport is physical exertion, which can be of a minuscule quantity. Baseball is a sport that has physical skill as the skill. Yet physical skill isn't what qualifies it as a sport. Physical exertion does. I've already said this before. 

Not all encyclopedias will separate sports of the mind from physical sports. A little bit of research later, and you should find that those examples I gave have been official considered sports.

I'm not talking about all encyclopedias. I'm talking about sports encyclopedias. Now some DO list games and sports separately. And guess which category chess is in. All games are "sports" of the mind so to speak. That's why we have two different words for these things. Mental (game) and physical (sport). 

If it helps, think of it this way. Can you play this activity on the internet? If your answer is yes, it's not a sport. In sports, (such as baseball, golf, hockey, etc), each person or team has to actually be there in person, and DO something physically that the other person or team can interact with. I can't hit a 4 iron on the internet. But I CAN move a knight on the internet.

Chess isn't a sport. The dictionary definition of "sport" proves this to be true. 

It doesn't matter if it is or isn't a sport, it makes no impact on the activity. It's not objectively better or worse for chess to be a sport or not to be. It's IRRELEVANT. 

Stop posting about this unnecessarily over saturated topic for views and attention, it's sad and shows you not only have no creativity, but also aren't prepared to post something for the merit of posting something informative or useful, but are just interested in attention.

Again, I disagree. I believe that chess meets the definition of a sport and has ever aspect of what a sport should have. If I were to make a chart of sports and games, I would put chess in the middle. Chess is a game and a sport. Not all games are sports, but I think chess is an exception for reasons stated earlier.

I wouldn't rely on just one sports encyclopedia to confirm your suspicions, as some encyclopedias will mark chess as a sport.

The fact that I have seen opposition to this forum (such as you) proves that this forum covers a topic important enough to still continue discussion. You disagree with me, so you don't like this forum. Try to rid yourself of biases before entering a discussion. It'll help you feel better.

Yeah. I consider it more of a sport than mere game, especially because of an overwhelming majority of deciders (Olympics, FIDE, majority of chess players, etc.)

I agree not all games are sports. But some are. What elevates a game to a sport is the physical aspect. All games are mental, so obviously all sports are mental too. But if a game cannot rely on physical skill to make it happen, then it remains a game. 

Again I think if we want to throw dictionaries and encyclopedias and other defining sources out the window, we should just use common sense. Can you play this activity on the internet? If the answer is yes, it's not a sport. At best it would be an esport, like video games, that require eye hand co-ordination. 

Sports cannot be played on the internet. Take golf for example. 800 years ago people were hitting a ball into a hole with a club. 8 minutes ago they are doing the exact same thing. That sport cannot be reduced or modified  to accomodate playing it on the internet as it REQUIRES actual physical interaction. Chess does not. Chess (like many other games) are easily played on the internet because that physical part is not necessary.

It depends. Even if you can play a game online, it may still require physical training. Why? Because staying in physical shape will also strengthen your mental shape. Chess is a great example. Most grandmasters will exercise a lot prior to a match. As Bobby Fischer once said "Your chess deteriorates as your body does. You can't separate body from mind." Whether you are preparing for an online match or not, you should be physical fit. Levon Aronian once said "The best way to manage the stress is to be in good physical shape. At this moment, I have lots of chess knowledge, and therefore, apart from chess, I need to have physical strength."

All sports cannot be played online. There are no exceptions. That is WHY they are sports. Online activities are virtual. They simulate. They aren't the real thing. Games can be played online because the format doesn't change very much. The internet is just your proxy. 

By proxy I mean someone else does it for you. Take solitaire or chess or any other online game. You aren't actually moving any pieces. You tell the internet to do it for you. And it does. The same thing could happen in real life. You could sit down at a table and tell someone else to make your moves for you. Games allow that. It's why gaming is so popular on the internet. 

But that's impossible for sports. Sports require YOU actually doing it yourself. No proxy. 

I have to disagree because I believe chess is a sport (which can be played online) but since you don't believe chess is a sport, I have to convince you it is for you to believe online sports are possible. But, tbh, I don't want to argue again. Agree to disagree. Good argument. I respect your opinion and you as a person.
